Balay SC 871 dryer: how to fix the full water tank warning
The tank is empty, but the dryer stops: check these parts before assuming a major fault.

The Balay SC 871 may stop the cycle and turn on the full tank light even when the lower drawer is empty. In this condenser model, water does not always fall directly into the removable container: it first collects in an internal area and must then be pumped to the upper tank through the drainage system. If that route fails, the appliance detects that the water cannot leave and switches off for protection.
If you have a problem with your dryer, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
Why the warning appears when the tank is empty
The indicator does not necessarily confirm that the removable container is full. It may actually mean that condensed water is not reaching the tank within the expected time. A blockage caused by lint, detergent residue or hardened dirt can narrow the passage and leave water trapped in the lower compartment.
The tank may also not be fully seated. The nozzle or small tube connecting the drawer to the water inlet must be perfectly aligned; a warped, dry or incorrectly fitted seal can stop the flow even when the passage looks clean. This explains cases where water comes out when the connection is pressed manually but stops flowing once the container is fitted.
The pump and duct are the first points to check
In a condenser dryer such as the SC 871, water transfer usually depends on a condensate pump. It is not simply a gravity drain: the appliance collects water in an internal sump and lifts it to the tank. If the pump is blocked by lint, works intermittently or has lost power, the warning light may come on shortly after the programme starts.
Before opening the casing, unplug the dryer and remove the tank, lint filter and air cooler if the appliance design allows access. Clean the housings with water and a lint-free cloth, but do not insert screwdrivers or metal objects into the pump. A displaced part can damage the impeller or puncture a duct. Also check that the internal hose is not bent and that the tank connection contains no residue.
A useful test is to place an empty container, select a short programme and listen for a brief buzzing sound when the appliance attempts to drain the water. The sound alone does not prove that the pump works: if it buzzes but does not lift water, it may be blocked or turning without sufficient flow. A complete lack of noise points more toward the pump, its wiring or the control board.
What to do if the warning returns after cleaning
Fit the tank correctly, check that the dryer is level and run a short cycle with a small load. An appliance that is not level can affect water collection, while an excessive load increases moisture and extends drainage. This model’s container holds approximately 4.2 litres, but the system may activate the warning before reaching that volume if water accumulates internally.
If the light returns with an empty tank and clear ducts, the issue no longer appears to be simple maintenance. The cause may be the condensate pump, level sensor, valve, sealing gasket or electronics. At that point, avoid continued use, particularly if water appears at the base, there is a hot plastic smell or the circuit breakers trip.
A professional diagnosis should be performed with the appliance disconnected and should check the entire water route, not just the visible tank. On a Balay SC 871, replacing a pump or gasket is usually more sensible than dismantling parts without testing, because surface cleaning cannot fix a defective sensor or a pump that has lost performance. The full-tank warning is a protective signal: dealing with it promptly helps prevent water from reaching the motor or electrical system.
A simple warning that may hide an internal fault
The difference between a blocked duct and a worn pump can be seen in the water flow: if it runs when the connection is released manually but not when the tank is fitted, check the fit, seal and pumping pressure. This clue is more useful than repeatedly emptying the drawer.
The SC 871 may continue running for a few minutes and stop later because it needs to collect a certain amount of condensate before activating drainage. Therefore, an early stop with an empty tank does not rule out a hydraulic problem; it often confirms one. A methodical inspection separates overdue cleaning from a repair requiring parts and measurements.
