Code 5 13 on a Balay induction hob usually indicates an internal communication or electronic control issue, rather than a problem with the pan or selected temperature. It may appear after a power cut, unstable electrical supply or a temporary fault between the power module and touch panel. The hob may stop heating, sound repeatedly or show the message on one or more cooking zones.

If you have a problem with your induction hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What code 5 13 indicates on a Balay hob

Balay shares much of its technology with other BSH Group appliances, but the exact interpretation may vary by model. In some manuals, an equivalent sequence appears as E0513 or with a space between the figures. The usual meaning points to a communication fault between electronic boards, an incorrect control reading or an anomaly in the module that supplies the cooking zones.

For this reason, changing the pan rarely solves the warning. An incompatible pan may trigger a missing-pan signal or prevent a zone from heating, but it does not normally generate this type of numerical code. It should also be distinguished from thermal protection: when the hob overheats, the message generally disappears after cooling, whereas 5 13 may remain even when the surface is cold.

The reset that may clear a temporary fault

Switch off all cooking zones and disconnect the hob using the circuit breaker. Touching the power button is not always enough because some components may retain power briefly. Leave the circuit disconnected for at least 30 seconds, then restore the supply.

Wait a few minutes before placing a pan on the hob and check whether the controls respond normally. If the message disappears and does not return during later use, it may have been a temporary fault caused by a voltage fluctuation. If it returns immediately, is accompanied by constant beeps or affects only one side, do not repeat resets indefinitely: the fault probably needs diagnosis.

When to stop using the hob

A hob that persistently displays the code should remain disconnected, especially if you smell hot plastic, hear crackling, trip the circuit breaker or see zones switching on and off without control. These signs may accompany a fault in the power module, wiring, supply or cooling system. Working inside the appliance while it is connected involves a risk of electric shock even when the glass appears switched off.

Inspection requires voltage measurements, wiring checks and verification of communication between modules. In some cases, repairing a connection is enough; in others, a technician must replace and program the electronic module. The price depends on the model and part, but a straightforward intervention often costs approximately 80 to 150 euros, while a new module may bring the repair to 200-400 euros or more. The full appliance reference, such as 3EB865FR or 3EB917M, is essential when ordering the correct component.

An electronic warning that calls for diagnosis, not guesswork

Code 5 13 is not a household fault that can be solved by cleaning the glass or using another pan. Resetting the appliance is reasonable when the warning follows a power cut, but its return indicates that the hob needs professional inspection. The safest approach is to note the code, model and circumstances in which it appears, disconnect the appliance if abnormal symptoms occur and avoid taking it apart.

Induction hobs operate at high power, with several modules working together beneath the black glass. When that electronic conversation is interrupted, the display acts as an early warning: there may be no smoke or visible heating element, but the system is already protecting itself. Responding promptly can prevent further damage and helps determine whether repairing the hob or replacing the affected module makes financial sense.
