Code 18 on a Xiaomi scooter usually indicates an abnormal motor reading, commonly linked to the Hall sensors. When it appears, the scooter may beep, show the warning on its display and stop accelerating as a protective measure. It is not a message to ignore or solve by replacing parts at random.

What code 18 means on a Xiaomi scooter

The system detects that the signal from one or more Hall sensors does not match the expected rotor movement. These small components are installed inside the motor and tell the controller the rotor position so it can regulate current and maintain steady power delivery.

This is why the fault can appear on models such as the M365, Pro, 1S, Essential, Pro 2, Mi Electric Scooter 3 and some versions of the 4 range. The warning has a similar name, although wiring and electronics may differ. The clearest symptom is that the motor does not respond to the throttle, even when the battery is charged.

Common causes and clues that help identify them

A frequent cause is a motor cable that is damaged, pinched or partly disconnected. The harness leaves the wheel hub and reaches the controller; along that route it can suffer pulls, rubbing or moisture. A short circuit between phases may also occur, particularly after riding through heavy rain, standing water or cleaning the scooter with excessive pressure.

The Hall sensor itself may have failed because of heat, vibration or wear. In other cases, the issue lies in the motor windings or in the controller, the board that manages electrical current. The moment when the warning appears provides a clue: after exposure to water, moisture or connectors are more likely, while after an impact or repair, displaced wiring or an incorrect connection becomes more plausible.

Before taking anything apart, switch off the scooter, unplug the charger and let it dry completely in a ventilated place. Check from the outside that the wheel turns without unusual rubbing and inspect the visible cable near the axle. Do not ride it if the motor locks, smells burnt or becomes excessively hot, because repeated testing can worsen electronic damage.

How to proceed without creating another fault

Inspecting connectors and measuring Hall signals requires tools and electronics knowledge. A technician can check continuity, sensor power and each phase response before deciding whether the cable can be repaired, a sensor replaced or the complete motor changed.

Replacing the motor is usually the solution when the winding is burnt or the sensor is integrated in a way that makes repair difficult. If there is only a loose terminal or damaged wire, the intervention may be smaller. The controller should not be replaced as a first step: doing so without confirming the source may expose two new parts to the same short circuit.

Code 18 is also not reliably fixed by updating firmware or restarting the Mi Home app. Those actions may correct communication errors, but they cannot repair a broken Hall sensor or a shorted conductor. After the repair, check that the motor accelerates smoothly and that beeping does not return before riding.

An electronic warning that calls for diagnosis, not guesswork

Warning 18 acts as a safety barrier: the scooter cuts power delivery because it cannot accurately calculate the motor position. Stopping in time protects the controller, motor and rider, especially during a trip when irregular acceleration could cause loss of control.

The exact cause cannot be determined from the displayed number alone. Moisture, a broken wire, a faulty Hall sensor and burnt windings can produce similar symptoms, but they require different repairs. Identifying the component before replacing it avoids unnecessary expense and restores stable, quiet and safe operation to the Xiaomi scooter.
