H error on a Balay ceramic hob: meaning and action
The H usually warns of residual heat, but some codes require checking the model and electrical connection.

The letter H on a Balay ceramic hob usually does not indicate a fault: it normally warns that a cooking zone remains hot after being switched off. The symbol may stay visible for several minutes, until the surface temperature falls to a safe level for touching.
How long it remains depends on use, selected power, cookware and the hob model. While the H is visible, treat the zone as hot even if it is no longer actively heating. If the indicator remains for a long time while the hob is completely cold, the situation is different and there may be a sensor or electronic control problem.

What the H means on a Balay hob
On Balay hobs, H usually represents residual heat in the cooking zone. The glass surface receives and retains some of the energy produced by the heating element or transferred by the cookware, so it can still burn even when the control is set to zero. It is a safety warning, not a request to reset the appliance.
The indicator may disappear sooner after low-power cooking and remain longer after boiling, frying or extended use. Do not cover the hob or place cloths, containers or plastic utensils on it while the H is still lit. The surface may feel only warm and still be hot enough to cause burns.
How to distinguish residual heat from a fault
The signal is normal when it appears just after cooking and gradually disappears as the zone cools. H may also be shown only on the circle that was used, while the other zones remain off. The symbol’s behavior is the main clue: it should fade or disappear after cooling.
The situation needs attention if H appears when the hob has been cold for hours, if it is accompanied by beeps, unexpected shutdowns or an unresponsive touch panel, or if a zone heats without being selected. In those cases, switch the appliance off and cut power at the electrical panel for a few minutes. Do not dismantle the hob: internal parts may remain energized and repairs require electrical testing.
Other codes that can be confused with H
On induction models, an F or similar symbol may relate to missing, incorrectly positioned or incompatible cookware. The pan must have a flat base and, on induction hobs, ferromagnetic material. A magnet sticking to the base is a simple check, although the appliance manual remains the most reliable reference.
Codes containing E, numbers or other combinations do not have one universal meaning across the entire Balay range. They may point to communication problems between modules, temperature issues, power supply faults or sensor failures. The model number or E-Nr, usually found in the documentation or beneath the hob, allows the exact interpretation to be checked without applying advice intended for another appliance.
When to stop using the ceramic hob
An H that disappears normally does not require technical assistance. However, stop using the hob if the glass is cracked, you notice a burning smell, sparks appear, the circuit breaker trips or the controls activate zones by themselves. Electrical safety must come before any attempt to reset the appliance.
Cleaning can also affect sensor readings. With the surface cold, remove grease and liquid residue using a soft cloth and a suitable product, avoiding metal scourers and abrasive cleaners. If the abnormal warning continues after power has been disconnected and restored, a qualified technician should inspect the appliance. An H shown after cooking, without other symptoms, is still simply a reminder that the glass retains heat.
