LG washing machine makes noise: bearings, load, or objects in the drum
Identify the source of the noise, prevent major breakdowns, and understand which sounds are normal and which are not.

A metallic noise during spinning, a low hum while rotating, or a dull thud when draining the water usually points to different causes in an LG washing machine. In many cases, the source is not a serious breakdown, but rather a leveling problem, a poorly placed hose, an unbalanced load, or a filter with residue. But when the sound changes tone, gets louder with each cycle, or appears accompanied by excessive vibration, the diagnosis is different: there may be worn bearings, tired shock absorbers, a pump working under strain, or even a loose part inside the drum.

In the second, the washing machine is asking for a more serious inspection because the affected component is no longer damping the movement properly or because the rotation is encountering resistance where it should not.
Front-loading models tend to make any irregularity more noticeable because the drum spins suspended and any imbalance is amplified like a poorly tensioned orchestral drum. The casing transmits the sound, the floor reflects it, and the kitchen or laundry room becomes a resonance box. That is why the same fault can seem minor in one home and alarming in another. The intensity of the noise, its frequency, and the vibration of the chassis tell a complete story; read carefully, it usually points to the source of the problem with considerable precision.
When filling sounds like a whistle or a short bang
During water intake, it is normal to hear a brief murmur, similar to a soft whistle. That sound appears when the valve opens and regulates the flow of water. In some homes, if the pressure is high, the sound becomes rougher and may seem like a hollow thud or an intermittent hum. It is not usually a sign of a fault if it lasts briefly and disappears once the flow stabilizes. However, when the noise becomes persistent, it is worth checking the installation before blaming the washing machine.
The inlet hoses also have more influence than it seems. If they are bent, crushed behind the cabinet, or too tight, water enters with difficulty and the appliance may emit a strange noise that is often interpreted as an internal failure. In an appliance that works with pressure, a simple bend in the hose can change the sound of the whole system, just as a crease changes the airflow in a flute. A poorly installed setup can seem like an electronic failure, but often it is only a basic mechanical problem.
It can also happen that the inlet filter or the household supply is dirty, something more common in older homes or in areas with sediment in the water. When that happens, the sound while filling changes suddenly and the washing machine takes longer to reach the correct level. That is no minor detail: if the valve works longer than necessary, wear accelerates. Banging and vibrations during spinning: the warning you should not downplay
Spinning is the most demanding moment for any LG washing machine. The drum rotates at high speed, the laundry compacts, and any imbalance is amplified. If the machine knocks, moves, or seems to walk across the floor, the problem may be with the load, but also with the suspension or the appliance anchoring. The deep, continuous noise that usually points to bearings
There is a sound technicians recognize almost immediately: a deep, harsh roar that appears when the drum turns and grows as the speed increases. That noise is usually associated with the bearings, the part that allows the drum to rotate smoothly. When they wear out, the metal loses its smoothness, looseness develops, and the rotation is no longer clean. The result is similar to an old wheel that needs grease, except here the problem is not fixed with a quick touch.
Moisture, frequent use, and the passing of time work against those components. If the drum seal starts to lose tightness, water finds its way to the bearing area and accelerates corrosion. At first the noise is timid, a kind of low hum. Later it becomes a constant rumble that does not disappear even if the laundry is well distributed. When the sound persists even when the drum is turned by hand with the washing machine switched off, suspicion of mechanical wear grows stronger.
Do not confuse that noise with the sound of a trapped coin or a loose button. A metal object produces irregular clicks or jingles; a damaged bearing generates a uniform sound, as if something were rubbing inside without rest. It is the difference between a stone in your shoe and a worn hinge. In the first case, it is enough to remove the object; in the second, parts must be disassembled and replaced. That is why this type of noise deserves immediate attention, because it usually indicates wear that gets worse with use.
Foreign objects, clasps, and coins: the small enemy that does a lot of damage
One of the most underestimated causes of noise is also one of the most common: small items trapped between the drum and the tub. Coins, keys, hairpins, bra underwires, screws, or even a plastic piece can travel from a pocket into the appliance and end up where they should not be. The sound they generate is usually clear, metallic, intermittent, and more intense during fast spinning. Sometimes it appears only at certain points in the program, as if something were hitting with every turn.
The problem is not limited to noise. A trapped object can scratch the drum, damage the door gasket, affect the lock, or even puncture nearby components if it moves forcefully. The washing machine keeps working, yes, but it does so with a silent threat inside. What starts as a jingling sometimes ends in a water leak, vibration, or constant rubbing. That is why it is wise to empty pockets, check zippers, and inspect delicate garments before each wash.
There are also noises that seem to come from inside but actually originate at the perimeter. A door latch that is not seated properly, a hinge with play, or an inner flap hitting due to vibration can sound like a broken part. The washing machine, in that sense, is honest and misleading at the same time: it transmits everything that happens to it, but the echo can hide the source. A dry, repeated sound deserves inspection; a squeaking sound when closing or opening the door points more to the front area.
The drain pump and filter when the noise appears while emptying
When draining water, the LG washing machine relies on the drain pump to push the liquid out of the drum. That mechanism emits a normal hum, brief and relatively uniform. If the sound becomes louder than usual, squeals, or seems like a tired motor, the pump may be working with dirt or with an obstacle inside. A washing machine is never completely silent. The relay clicks, the pump hums, water passes through the solenoid valve, and the drum spins as part of its usual language. Normally, those sounds are relatively stable from one cycle to the next. If one day the appliance sounds like a coffee maker and the next like an old mixer, the pattern has changed and it is worth finding out why.
Repetition also offers clues. A noise that appears only in one specific program may be associated with spin speed, load, or weight distribution. One that remains in every cycle suggests a more persistent problem. Vibrations that increase over time, a drum that takes longer to reach speed, or a smell of friction accompanying the noise are warning signs. You do not need dramatic symptoms to think of a fault; sometimes a small but constant deviation is enough.
On the other hand, there are sounds that are less concerning than they seem. A small whistle while filling with cold water, a click when the door locks, or a brief change in tone when the machine switches from washing to spinning usually fall within normal operation. The difference is not only in volume, but also in continuity and context. An isolated noise can be a note of normal operation; a repetitive noise, a sign of wear.
The role of leveling, the floor, and installation in the noise heard at home
Often, the washing machine is not the main culprit. An uneven floor, slightly loose tiles, or an unstable base turn any vibration into a racket. The surface on which the appliance rests acts as an amplifier. Just as a speaker placed on a hollow table sounds different, a washing machine resting on an unsteady floor can seem noisier than it really is.
Checking the leveling feet does not require disassembly, but it does require paying attention to the behavior of the whole unit. If the appliance leans to one side, the drum works off balance and spinning becomes more aggressive. Adjusting the height and ensuring that all four feet rest properly can significantly reduce noise. A well-leveled unit spins more stably, bangs less, and transmits less vibration to the home.
Location also matters. There is a huge acoustic difference between a washing machine squeezed into a narrow niche and one with enough space around it. The first bounces more; the second breathes better. If it also shares space with a dryer, a countertop, or a side cabinet, any physical contact can turn into knocking. Checking clearances, removing nearby objects, and leaving a reasonable margin around the appliance usually reduces a significant portion of household noises.
When the noise points to a repair rather than a minor adjustment
There comes a point when noise stops being merely annoying and becomes diagnostic. If the sound gets louder and louder, appears in every cycle, is accompanied by abnormal vibration, or remains after leveling the machine and checking the load, a technical inspection is needed. In that scenario, the cause may be in the suspension, the shaft, the bearings, the pump, or an internal part that no longer stays in the correct position.
Be especially wary of deep, persistent noises, banging when changing speed, and any squeaking that does not disappear when the drum is emptied. Also of small leaks, a damp smell at the base, or stains around the filter. These are subtle details, almost invisible at first, but they usually accompany faults that grow worse with use. A washing machine that makes more noise than usual rarely fixes itself.
By contrast, a unit that only sounds different after a heavy wash and then returns to normal is usually asking for better load distribution or an installation adjustment. The line between maintenance and failure is there, in the persistence of the symptom. That is the practical difference between a washing machine that is complaining and a washing machine that is breaking down.
What the noise leaves behind when it is ignored for too long
The unpleasant sound not only disturbs the peace; it also wears the appliance down from the inside. Sustained vibration loosens screws, strains connections, and accelerates the fatigue of parts working under pressure. The drum, pump, supports, and electronics do not suffer in the same way, but they all receive part of the impact. What began as a domestic nuisance can become a higher bill if allowed to progress.
In addition, the energy behind the noise is often accompanied by less efficient operation. If the pump is clogged, the cycle takes longer. If the drum rotates off balance, the appliance is constantly correcting itself. If the bearings are damaged, the motor compensates. The result is an appliance that works harder to do the same job.
