F4 error on a Balay ceramic hob: causes and solution
The F4 code usually indicates excess heat, although some models require sensor or electronic checks.

The F4 code on a Balay ceramic hob usually appears when the appliance detects excessive heat or a thermal condition that prevents it from continuing to heat safely. In many cases, it disappears after switching the appliance off, allowing it to cool and restarting it; if it returns while the surface is cold, there may be a problem with the sensor, wiring or electronic module.
If you have a problem with your ceramic hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the F4 code means on a Balay hob
The F4 indication should not be interpreted identically on every model, because Balay uses different electronic platforms and control systems. Each hob’s manual takes priority, but the most common explanation is that the appliance has activated protection against residual heat or overheating. The surface may remain very hot even after the cooking zone has been switched off.
The warning may be triggered by leaving a zone on for too long, cooking with an unsuitable pan or accidentally covering the control area. A warped base can also contribute, because it transfers heat unevenly. On induction hobs, insufficient ventilation beneath the worktop or a blocked air intake can raise the temperature of internal components.
A spill on the touch controls is not usually the direct cause of F4, but moisture and residue can affect sensor readings or prevent the panel from responding. Before carrying out further tests, remove any liquid and leave the surface completely dry, without using abrasive scourers or harsh products.
How to clear F4 without risking the hob
Switch the ceramic hob off using its normal control and remove the cookware. Do not try to cool it by pouring water over it or placing wet cloths on the glass: a sudden temperature change can damage it. Let it rest until the surface is cool to the touch; depending on use and model, this may take 20 to 40 minutes.
Then disconnect the power at the plug or circuit breaker for a few minutes and reconnect it. This reset may clear a temporary warning, but it does not repair a persistent fault. Clean the panel with a soft, dry cloth, remove objects covering the controls and test the hob with a flat, stable-based pan.
Cookware requires one clarification: glass and ceramic pans may work on some radiant hobs, but they are not suitable for induction unless they have a compatible base. In the latter case, a suitable pan should attract a magnet on its base. Using the right cookware helps distribute heat more evenly and prevents misleading diagnoses.
When it is no longer a temporary warning
If F4 disappears after cooling and resetting, the appliance probably activated thermal protection during use. Even so, monitor it during the next cooking cycles: a hob that displays the code again after only a few minutes may have a faulty temperature sensor or poor ventilation.
Professional service is necessary when the message remains while the hob is cold, appears across all zones or is accompanied by a plastic smell, electrical noises, sparks or tripped breakers. Disconnect the appliance and do not remove the lower cover: electrical voltage may remain inside even after switching it off. The technician will need the exact model and serial number to consult the appropriate documentation and determine whether only a sensor needs replacing or the power module also requires inspection.
The best prevention combines a clean surface, flat cookware and sufficient ventilation around the installation. Do not block the cabinet’s air inlets, avoid dragging pans across the glass and respect cooking times. F4 does not always indicate a serious fault, but it should not be ignored when it repeats: a brief warning may be normal protection; a constant one may be the first sign of a component requiring inspection.
