E1 also appears when there is overflow in the base. Sometimes the problem is not a continuous leak, but excess water caused by an inlet valve that does not close properly, a pressure switch that reads the level incorrectly, or too much foam that alters the system reading. Unsuitable detergents, used in excess, not only make the wash worse; they can fool the machine and make it behave as if it were overfilled.
Another possibility is that the lower tray itself has collected water from a previous episode. This detail is important: the appliance may keep showing the fault even though the leak is no longer active, because the safety sensor keeps the lock engaged while it detects moisture. That is why blindly restarting is not enough; you need to find out where the water came from and whether the base is still wet.
In models with internal hoses, a float, or a contact-based protection system, sensor faults or corroded connectors can also be involved. They are not as common as a mechanical leak, but they do happen. A sulfate-covered connection, a pinched cable, or a deteriorated microswitch is enough for the electronics to read an emergency where there is only a faulty signal.

The logical sequence starts with what is visible. You need to look for water under the housing, around the door, or behind the kick plate. It is also a good idea to check the inlet hose and the drain hose, because a sharp bend, a loose clamp, or a poorly seated connection can leave very clear moisture marks. In a closed kitchen, a small leak smells like old damp and makes the floor sticky before it becomes obvious.
Then check the inside. An unusual amount of water in the tub at the end of the cycle, traces of undissolved soap, or excess foam are useful signs. Excess detergent does not always cause E1, but it can complicate the system’s behavior and make water reach delicate areas. If the appliance has used tablets, liquid detergent, and rinse aid in a disordered way, it is worth checking whether there is over-foaming on the next start-up.

There are cases where the E1 warning stops being a simple household issue and becomes a workshop repair. If the base fills up again after drying, if the unit leaks water every time it starts a wash, or if drops are seen near the motor, pump, or tub, the repair can no longer be solved with a reset. In that scenario, the cause is in a component that needs replacement or a broader technical intervention.
The electronics can also come into play. A level sensor sending an incorrect reading, deteriorated wiring, or a board damaged by moisture can keep the lock active. It is not the most common cause, but it does happen when a leak has lasted long enough to dampen contacts and terminals. In such cases, cleaning without fixing the cause only delays the same fault.
If the appliance has suffered several moisture incidents, the inspection should be methodical. You need to look for limescale marks, white residue around the connections, oxidation on terminals, and areas with verdigris or hardened dirt. Those traces tell a very precise story: where limescale appears, water passed through before; where rust appears, the leak was not brief. The dishwasher almost always leaves clues.

A real leak is usually accompanied by a wet floor, a damp smell, or visible dripping during or after the cycle.
