Why does clothes come out wrinkled from the washing machine and how to avoid it

Clothes can come out like an accordion because of a very specific combination of factors: overloading, spinning that is too intense, poorly chosen cycles, and, above all, the amount of time they remain damp inside the drum. In practice, wrinkles arise more from how the washing machine is used than from an isolated fault in the garment. When fabric is compressed, spins without room, or is left piled up after washing, the fibers set in an irregular position and it then becomes very hard to restore their original shape.

What happens inside the drum when the laundry comes out creased
The inside of a washing machine is not a neutral space. During the wash, clothes are not only soaked and cleaned: they are also compressed, twisted, and gently bumped against one another. That friction is part of the process, but when the drum is too full or the program does not suit the fabric, the garments become packed together. The result is like taking a wrinkled sheet out of a tight bag: the fabric retains the imprint of the fit, the spinning, and the pressure.
There is another decisive detail that often goes unnoticed. The cycle does not end with washing, but with spinning, and that is where a large part of the problem is concentrated. A strong spin does expel more water, yes, but it also flattens the fibers and sets creases, especially in cotton, linen, or viscose. The more delicate the fabric, the more visible the mark left by excessive speed becomes. In a shirt, for example, it is enough for the collar or sleeves to fold unevenly for the crease to become fixed as if it had passed through a press.
Moisture also works against it. A wet garment is malleable, and that has a useful side because it washes better, but also a deceptive one: if it stays bunched up in the drum, the weight of the water deforms it. When the cycle ends and the door remains closed, the clothes cool in that position and the fiber adopts the shape of the heap. It is a silent mistake, but one of the most common.
Drum load: the balance that shows up most in wrinkles
Putting in too much laundry seems like a way to save time, water, and electricity, but in reality it often ends up being costly in finish. If the drum is at its limit, the garments cannot move freely and the water does not circulate evenly. The result is twofold: on the one hand, the wash becomes less effective; on the other, the fabrics fold over one another as if they were inside a poorly closed folder. Lack of space is one of the most direct causes of wrinkled clothes.
Nor is it a good idea to go to the opposite extreme. An almost empty drum can make some heavy garments hit harder and rotate in an unnatural way. The right point is the one that allows movement, not compression. In household washing machines, that margin depends on the program and the appliance’s capacity, but the idea is always the same: clothes need to tumble, not get pressed flat. When a load is properly measured, shirts, T-shirts, and sheets move like loose pieces, not like a rigid mass.
Fabrics matter too. Mixing very light garments with towels, jeans, or thick sweatshirts worsens the result because each type of fabric absorbs water and responds to spinning differently. Cotton wrinkles easily, linen even more, and synthetic fibers usually resist better. When washed together, the more delicate garment receives the pressure of the heavier one and ends up deformed, like a thin sheet trapped under a closed book.
The chosen program can decide the final appearance of the clothes
Not all cycles treat fibers the same way. A program designed for durable clothing usually includes more mechanical action and a more demanding spin, while one for delicate garments reduces movement and softens the treatment. Always using the same wash mode is one of the most common reasons for persistent wrinkles, because it does not distinguish between an office shirt and a bath towel. The washing machine does exactly what it is asked to do; the problem appears when it is asked for too much or asked the wrong thing.
Temperature also has an influence. Very hot laundry can help with certain stains, but it is not always suitable for fabrics that deform easily. Natural fibers, especially those with a looser weave, can lose some of their shape if they receive heat and intense movement at the same time. Heat does not wrinkle on its own, but it prepares the ground for the crease to set more firmly. That is why clothing labels remain a useful guide, even if many people only look at them when the garment is already damaged.
In current models, short programs and wrinkle-reduction functions help quite a lot when the laundry is not especially dirty. They do not work miracles, but they do reduce friction time and, with it, the likelihood of the fiber ending up folded. In everyday laundry, that difference is clearly noticeable: one T-shirt comes out flexible and another, with the wrong cycle, ends up stiff and marked like damp paper that dried badly.
Spinning: drying efficiency and the risk of creases
Spinning is one of the main culprits behind the final finish. The more revolutions per minute, the more water the machine expels, and that reduces the subsequent drying time. But the price can be high if the clothes tend to wrinkle. More speed does not always mean a better result; for many garments, it means only more marks and more ironing afterward.
Shirts, blouses, cotton dresses, and fine-fabric trousers usually benefit from moderate speed. Very thick garments tolerate strong spinning better because their structure withstands more tension, although even then it is wise not to overdo it. A blanket or towel may come out fine with a high spin, whereas a shirt comes out as if it had been through a packaging press. The user notices the difference not in cleanliness, but in the time it then takes to deal with the laundry.
There are also washing machines with functions designed to minimize that effect. Some models adjust the final spin so clothes come out looser and less compacted. Technology helps, but it does not make up for a bad load or the wrong program. In other words, the appliance can help, but the way the laundry is organized remains the decisive factor. What happens after washing matters as much as the wash itself
One of the most common scenes at home is also one of the most damaging to the finish of clothes: opening the washing machine late, long after the cycle ended. Moisture, the garment’s own weight, and being left enclosed create a kind of memory in the fabric. Wrinkles set while the clothes are still inside, not only when they are washed. If they are also left bunched up in the drum, the fibers cool stuck to one another and the mark hardens.
Shaking out each garment as you remove it makes a big difference. It does not remove the toughest crease, but it helps relax the weave and separate fabrics that have stuck together. In shirts or thin T-shirts, hanging them up immediately also matters. A quick, almost routine domestic gesture can save several minutes of ironing later. When laundry goes from the washing machine to the drying rack without delay, gravity works in your favor, not against you.
The drying method has a similar effect. Hanging a garment with clothespins on the shoulders, leaving a shirt well stretched out, or placing a sheet with its edges aligned reduces crease formation. By contrast, hanging a T-shirt balled up over the rack condemns it to dry in the same ball shape. Dry clothes keep the posture they had when they started drying, so care does not end in the drum.
Detergent, fabric softener, and residue in the machine: when excess also wrinkles
It is not all about visible creases. Sometimes clothes look clean but come out with a rough texture or with residues that stiffen the surface of the fabric. That also promotes wrinkles, because a fiber loaded with residue does not drape naturally or recover its shape well. Using more detergent than necessary does not improve the wash; on the contrary, it can leave deposits, create excess foam, and force the machine to work worse.
Fabric softener deserves nuance. Used in the right amount, it can leave clothes more flexible and make ironing easier in some fabrics. Used badly, it can saturate certain fibers or provide no real benefit. In technical, sports, or very absorbent garments, it can even be counterproductive. Clothes do not need a heavy coating to look better; they need proper cleaning and effective rinsing. When the water does not rinse well, the fabrics stay stiffer and that hardening translates into more noticeable marks.
The washing machine itself also has an influence. Dirt, soap residue, lint, and built-up grime can interfere with the wash and leave odor or marks. A clean machine does not iron clothes, but it does prevent the fabric from coming out damaged by internal residue. It is worth airing the drum, checking the door gasket, and cleaning the detergent compartments regularly. It is a not-so-glamorous task, but it keeps the process stable and gentler on garments.
The fabrics that resist coming out smooth the most and why they do so
Some fabrics wrinkle almost by nature. Linen tops the list: fresh, elegant, and much loved in summer, but with a notable memory for creases. Fine cotton also marks easily, especially in T-shirts, sheets, and shirts. Viscose and some light blends may seem docile when washed and yet come out with very visible creases when dry. It is not a defect in the garment, but a property of its fiber and weave.
By contrast, blends with synthetic fibers usually withstand the trip through the washing machine better. Not because they are immune, but because they recover their shape more easily. The difference is noticeable in everyday life: a cotton shirt needs more care than a polyester sports top, even if both go into the same drum. Anyone who washes attentively quickly learns that not all clothes obey the same logic and that the fabric dictates more than it seems.
Thickness matters too. A thick garment can hide internal creases, but a lightweight piece shows every rub. That is why wrinkles are so visible on collars, cuffs, hems, and seams, which are areas where the fabric already has a defined shape and any pressure becomes a visible line. Wrinkles do not appear at random: they concentrate where the fabric folds, stretches, or overlaps.
A simple wash adjustment changes much more than it seems
The washing machine does not always need the longest program or the highest spin to give a good result. Often, the best wash is the one that respects the fabric and gives the garment room to move. Adjusting the load, selecting a program that matches the clothes, reducing the spin for delicate items, and taking the laundry out as soon as it finishes are a set of small measures that, combined, make a big difference. They are domestic details, but they have workshop-level effects.
It helps to think of laundry as a chain of decisions. If clothes go in packed together, spin too fast, come out late, and dry without being stretched out, wrinkles are guaranteed. If, on the other hand, they go in neatly, with room to circulate, and come out quickly to be hung properly, the final texture improves visibly. The difference can be as simple as going from a T-shirt that absolutely needs ironing to one that only needs a light pass.
The good news is that most of these problems do not indicate a breakdown. They are, above all, the result of washing habits. Wrinkled clothes are rarely a fate; they are almost always the sum of small mismatches. And that is precisely the useful part: what you learn to correct stops repeating itself, wash after wash.

A modern washing machine can do a lot, but it cannot replace the judgment used to prepare the clothes. Checking labels, separating heavy fabrics from lighter ones, not filling the drum to the top, choosing a reasonable spin, and not leaving the laundry forgotten inside are decisions as simple as they are decisive. The final appearance of a garment is decided in minutes, not hours.
Clothes that come out less wrinkled are not the result of a single trick, but of a coherent chain of care. The machine cleans, yes; but the way it is used determines whether the garment dries with elegance or with the memory of a knot. In a home where laundry is understood as a process rather than an automatic routine, wrinkles lose ground. And that, in everyday life, is as noticeable as a soft fabric to the touch or a shirt hanging straight on a hanger.
