Balay washing machine errors: codes and safe solutions
Identify Balay’s most common warnings and learn which safe checks to make before calling a technician.

When a Balay washing machine stops its program and displays a code, the warning usually identifies the affected area: water supply, drainage, door, motor or electronics. Reading the message correctly avoids unnecessary dismantling and helps distinguish a simple blockage from a fault requiring professional attention.
If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What Balay’s main codes mean
The E17, F17 and E29 warnings are usually linked to the water supply. The tap must be fully open and the hose must not be kinked behind the appliance. It is also worth checking the small filter at the water inlet connection, always with the machine unplugged and the tap closed. Low pressure or a defective inlet valve can keep the error active even when the installation looks correct.
The F04, E06, E18 and F18 codes normally indicate difficulty draining water. The pump filter can collect coins, lint or buttons; before opening it, place towels and a container under the cover because retained water may come out. The drain hose must be clear, free from crushing and correctly connected. Do not force the pump or insert metal objects to remove a blockage.
The E36-10 code can also result from a blocked drain, a connection installed too high or excessive detergent. In this case, the drain hose should not be installed more than 1 meter high. If the model has automatic dosing, an excessive base quantity can create foam and hinder drainage. Reducing the dose according to the manual helps distinguish a usage issue from a genuine fault.
E16 usually means that the door has not closed correctly. A garment trapped between the seal and glass, an overloaded drum or a worn lock can prevent it from engaging. E10, sometimes shown with -00, -10 or -20, is linked to a blocked pump in the automatic dosing system. Cleaning must follow the model’s manual, without dismantling the unit blindly.
When to stop the machine and request assistance
The E02 and F43 codes are related to the motor. The brushes, tachogenerator, wiring or control module may be involved, requiring measurements and dismantling. If the drum does not turn, makes unusual knocking sounds or the warning returns after switching the appliance off and on, unplug the washing machine and avoid further cycles until it has been assessed.
E61 indicates a possible electronic fault and should not be treated as a simple notification. Similarly, a code linked to water in the lower tray, a visible leak, a burning smell or tripped circuit breaker requires closing the tap and unplugging the appliance when safe. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination; removing covers or checking circuit boards without experience can worsen the damage.
The exact model matters: Balay uses different control-panel generations, and some codes vary between series. Note the full message, selected program, whether water remained in the drum and any preceding noise. The washing machine reference, usually found on a label inside the door frame, allows the technician to consult the correct procedure and prevents a balance or child-lock warning being mistaken for a breakdown.
Regular filter cleaning, hose checks and moderate detergent dosing reduce many drainage problems. However, a persistent code does not disappear by restarting the appliance: a reset only clears a temporary fault; it does not repair a pump, lock or damaged board. The display is a useful clue, but the final diagnosis depends on the underlying cause.
A code is a clue, not a complete diagnosis
Balay washing machine errors make it possible to act methodically and protect the appliance, but not every repair is suitable for home users. Filter, tap, hoses and door are reasonable user checks; motors, electronics, internal leaks and wiring should be handled by qualified personnel.
Responding to the right warning instead of repeatedly starting wash cycles can prevent a minor issue from damaging other components. The display provides the first clue; safety, the manual and a professional inspection determine the next step.
