Neff dishwasher E22 error: what it means and what to do
A blocked filter does not mean the pump has failed. What to check safely when your dishwasher stops.

The E22 code on a Neff dishwasher usually indicates dirty or blocked filters. The first check is to inspect and clean the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub, with the appliance switched off and following its manual. It does not automatically mean a failed pump: if the warning remains after the filters are clean and correctly fitted, an authorised technician should investigate the drainage system and internal components.
If you have a problem with your dishwasher, you can use our free error code finder. It helps you identify errors and find straightforward, effective troubleshooting guidance.
The warning points to filtration, not a part that needs replacing
The filters catch food debris so it does not circulate again with the wash water. When grease, fibres or particles cover their surface, they create a barrier to water flow. On Neff ranges that use this warning, E22 directs attention to that issue: dirty or blocked filters, rather than immediately indicating an electronic fault or a need to replace components.
The code may appear alongside an interrupted programme, retained water or poor washing results. These symptoms help describe what happened, but none identifies the cause on its own. Residue on a glass or poor drainage can also have other explanations. That is why the complete display message is more useful in guiding the checks than a general impression of how well the appliance is washing.
Some descriptions of E22 focus on residual water around the sump, while others refer directly to dirty filters. These are not equivalent statements: one describes a symptom and the other identifies the main area to check. The sensible approach is to begin with accessible filter maintenance, without treating the presence of water as proof that the pump has failed.
Filter contamination is not always visible from above
The filter assembly sits at the bottom of the tub, usually beneath the lower basket, although its shape and removal mechanism depend on the model. It may contain several parts and mesh surfaces. Looking at it from the doorway is not enough: a thin layer of grease can restrict water flow without forming a bulky blockage. What matters is the condition of the entire filtering surface.
Rice grains, vegetable fibres and sauce residue can collect in different places. A large fragment is easy to spot; a sticky film is much less obvious. This explains why a filter that appears clear may still need cleaning. There does not have to be a single object acting as a plug: many small deposits together can restrict the assembly’s performance.
How the filter is fitted after maintenance matters too. A clean filter that is not seated properly is not in the condition intended by the manufacturer. If the warning started just after cleaning, check the fitting rather than assuming a new fault has developed. Follow the positioning and locking marks on the assembly, without forcing parts that do not fit easily.
Torn mesh, a distorted edge or a damaged locking mechanism calls for a different assessment from dirt. Cleaning cannot repair physical damage, and forcing the filter into place will not correct it either. Before using the appliance again, confirm that the complete assembly can sit securely and remain intact. Do not run the dishwasher without its filters as a test to see whether the code disappears.
Water at the bottom needs context
A visible layer of water in the tub after a programme stops can accompany a filtration or drainage problem. However, this should not be confused with moisture or water that may remain within the lower recess, depending on the appliance design. The amount and location of the water, together with the point in the cycle when the warning appears, help describe the symptom more accurately.
It is useful to note whether water covers the tub floor, whether the programme stopped before finishing and whether the same behaviour returns after cleaning. There is no need to measure it or dismantle anything to provide that information. A photograph of the interior and another of the display preserve a record of the original fault, particularly if the message later changes or temporarily disappears.
If there is water outside the dishwasher, this is no longer just a filter check. Do not start another wash, and close the inlet tap if it can be reached safely. Avoid touching plugs or connections in a wet area and arrange professional assistance. An external leak means stopping use; do not try to resolve it by tilting the appliance or emptying its base.
Careful cleaning has a clear stopping point
Before accessing the filter, switch off the dishwasher and allow the interior to cool if the cycle has just stopped. Follow the manual’s disconnection instructions for cleaning; only handle a plug if it is accessible and dry, with dry hands. Do not pull out an integrated appliance or dismantle cabinetry or panels to reach hidden connections.
Once the lower basket is removed, take out the filter assembly only using the procedure intended for the user. Some designs have a twist-lock mechanism, but not all models come apart in the same way. If there is resistance or it is unclear which part releases, check the model’s manual. Forcing the locking mechanism can turn routine maintenance into avoidable damage.
Rinse the removable parts with lukewarm water and remove debris with a soft brush, without distorting the mesh. Check the accessible surfaces and folds until attached residue has been removed. Do not use sharp tools, corrosive products or mixtures of cleaning agents. For this check, gentle physical cleaning matters more than adding household substances whose compatibility with the appliance has not been established.
Look into the visible recess without reaching in blindly: there may be glass fragments or other sharp objects. Household checks stop at accessible areas expressly described as user maintenance. Do not open the pump or remove panels to chase a blockage. If debris is out of reach or internal mechanisms need to be accessed, the work belongs to an authorised technician.
A reset only helps after the cause has been addressed
Once the parts are clean, refit the assembly as described in the manual and make sure it is seated properly. No parts should be left over, and nothing should remain raised out of position. The locking mechanism should reach its correct position without unusual force. This check prevents maintenance ending with an incomplete assembly that leaves the filter outside its intended operating condition.
You can then use the cancellation or reset procedure specified by the manufacturer for that model. There is no universal button combination or disconnection time for every Neff dishwasher. Leaving it switched off for longer does not clean blocked mesh. Clearing the warning does not remove an obstruction, so a reset must not replace the check prompted by the code.
If there are no leaks and the assembly is correctly fitted, a test run following the manual allows you to see whether the appliance drains and completes its programme. If E22 returns, do not keep starting cycles or repeating resets. Cleaning and checking the filter has already established something important: the household check has not resolved the problem, and professional diagnosis is needed.
Similar codes distinguish different problems
Similar numbers do not make warnings interchangeable. E22 focuses attention on the filters; E24 and E25 point towards drainage problems that may involve other areas. The table sets out relevant differences on Neff ranges that use these warnings. The specific model’s manual takes priority, especially when the display shows a longer format or a different combination.
| Code | Description | Cause | Safe check or action |
|---|---|---|---|
| E22 | Dirty or blocked filters. | A build-up of debris restricting water flow through the filter assembly. | Clean the removable filters and check their fitting, following the manual. |
| E24 | Water drainage problem. | A kinked or blocked drain hose, or a blocked or still-sealed waste connection. | Only inspect the section of hose already in view. Inaccessible connections and blockages need professional attention. |
| E25 | Problem around the drain pump. | A blocked pump or a cover that is not correctly fitted, depending on the model. | Do not dismantle the pump. Check which maintenance the manual permits and arrange inspection if internal access is needed. |
| E15 | Leak protection activated. | Water collected in the base tray, usually associated with a leak. | Stop using the appliance, close the inlet tap if safe and arrange technical assistance. Do not tilt the appliance. |
| E14 | Problem detecting the incoming water flow. | An abnormal flow meter reading or water control system issue, depending on the range. | Diagnosis must follow the model’s requirements; do not handle sensors or internal connections. |
| E09 | Heating-related fault. | A possible heater or heating circuit fault; the component must be confirmed through diagnosis. | Do not work on the heater or wiring. Arrange technical inspection. |
| E:6103 | Failure to drain on models such as the S199ZB803E. | A possible drainage blockage, kinked hose or problem with the pump or its cover. | Check the specific manual. Do not automatically treat it as equivalent to E22. |
E15 deserves clarification: describing it simply as a lack of water is insufficient and can be misleading. Its association with leak protection requires a different response from cleaning the filter. Similarly, a heating warning such as E09 is not resolved by automatically applying the E22 procedure, even though both appear on dishwashers from the same brand.
E22 must not be confused with Er22 on a hob either. A partial match between letters and numbers does not transfer a diagnosis from one type of appliance to another. Even within Neff, the appliance type and range form part of the code’s identification. Instructions for a hob’s touch controls do not explain a dishwasher filtration warning.
Clean filters change the direction of diagnosis
If the filter assembly is clean, undamaged and correctly fitted, a persistent warning needs a wider investigation. There may be a drainage restriction beyond the accessible area or a problem requiring component checks. The code alone does not identify the faulty part. Replacing the pump or blaming the electronics without verification goes further than the display information supports.
You can look for obvious crushing in the visible section of drain hose, provided the appliance does not need to be moved. You can also note whether the kitchen sink drains normally, as additional information about the household waste system. Do not loosen joints or dismantle pipes as part of this check, and do not try to clear the dishwasher’s circuit with chemical drain cleaners.
A photograph of the warning, the full appliance identification and a description of when it stops are useful for technical diagnosis. The rating plate identifies the model; check the manual for its location if it is not visible when the door is open. Explaining that the filters have already been cleaned avoids repeated explanations and provides a verifiable starting point, without assuming which spare part will be needed.
The cost depends on the confirmed fault, not the E22 number
A blockage that disappears after filter cleaning is not the same as a fault requiring component replacement. That is why the warning alone cannot establish a repair price. The financial decision should rest on a diagnosis and an itemised quotation, not on buying a pump as a precaution. The code guides the search for the problem; it is not a spare-part reference.
If the filter is damaged, its replacement must match the dishwasher’s exact identification, not just the brand or its appearance. Two similar assemblies may have different catches or dimensions. Confirm compatibility and return conditions before buying. A part that appears to fit does not guarantee that it filters and locks in the way intended by the manufacturer.
When considering a professional repair, clarify whether diagnosis and call-out charges are separate or deducted if you approve the work. If the appliance may have cover, check the terms before authorising work by another provider. Do not assume that every cleaning task or breakage is included. Cover and call-out charges must be confirmed with the relevant provider, not inferred from the displayed code.
Restoring the wash without turning every warning into a bigger fault
Prevention involves removing large solid food scraps from dishes and checking the filter as often as the manual and actual use require. A household washing containers with thick sauces or plenty of fibrous residue may find deposits sooner than another. The filter assembly’s condition is more useful than imposing the same schedule on every model and type of load.
Maintenance also includes accessible areas specified by the manufacturer, such as seals and spray arms, without unapproved dismantling. A dishwasher cleaning product may be part of maintenance when recommended, but it does not replace removing trapped debris. A hot cycle cannot guarantee clearance of a filter covered in residue and should not be used repeatedly while the appliance continues to display the fault.
The basis for returning to normal use is an intact, clean and properly seated filter, no leaks, and operation that finishes without the warning recurring. If E22 returns, the next action is not to try replacement parts at random. Stopping tests and keeping fault details allows the move from household maintenance to technical diagnosis with less uncertainty and without unnecessary intervention.
