Balay induction touch control error: causes and solutions

The warning on a Balay induction cooktop touch control usually appears when the panel detects moisture, dirt, an object over the sensors or an electronic irregularity. The ER22 code is closely associated with the Touch Control: the cooktop stops operating to prevent accidental activation or a possible short circuit.

Why the ER22 error appears on the touch panel

The most common cause is water, oil or another liquid spilled over the controls. Moisture may also remain under the glass after cleaning or result from steam condensation from the oven, particularly when the cooktop is installed directly above it. The system interprets the moisture as an irregular touch and locks the cooking zones.

The problem may appear several hours after cooking. A worktop that looks dry can still hold moisture around the panel edges or beneath the button module. That is why disconnecting the cooktop does not always remove the warning immediately: the electronics need the area to dry completely before normal operation returns.

On some models, the same behavior occurs when a cloth, lid or utensil rests on the sensors. The touch panel needs a clear surface to distinguish an intentional command from accidental pressure. If the code remains with the glass clean and dry, the Touch Control itself may be defective.

How to reset a Balay cooktop safely

Turn the cooktop off using its controls and remove all cookware. Then cut the power at the plug, circuit breaker or corresponding switch in the electrical panel for at least 30 seconds. Restore power, wait a few moments before touching the panel and check whether the warning has disappeared.

If there was a spill or recent cleaning, leave the surface completely clear and dry. It is also advisable to ventilate the space beneath the worktop without applying direct heat or inserting objects through the vents. A hair dryer can damage components or push moisture farther inside, so natural, extended drying is the safer option.

The child lock can be mistaken for a touch-control failure. If a key symbol appears and the panel does not respond, hold the lock sensor for around four seconds, although the exact time depends on the model. Other warnings that may accompany the Touch Control

An F indicator usually means that a suitable pan has not been detected, while H or h normally indicates residual heat in the cooking zone. Flashing indicators may be caused by wet controls, an object over the panel or a badly positioned pan, not necessarily by a fault.

E, U and certain numerical combinations can point to voltage problems, overheating, communication between modules or an electronic failure. After a power cut, the cooktop may show a temporary error that disappears after a reset. If it returns, note the exact code and when it occurs.

The cooktop may also switch off because of excessive temperature, insufficient ventilation or prolonged use at maximum power. The fan can continue running after the appliance is switched off; this is normal while the components cool. An electrical smell, smoke, sparks or repeated breaker trips would be concerning.

If ER22 remains after drying the surface, clearing the controls and disconnecting the power, the cause may be the capacitive sensor, wiring or control module. Opening the cooktop without the necessary knowledge is dangerous because it works with high electrical voltages even after being disconnected.

It is also advisable to stop using the appliance if the error appears alongside uneven heating, constant shutdowns or failures affecting several zones. Before requesting an inspection, prepare the exact model, the displayed code and a description of when the issue began.
