The F138 error on a Miele washing machine is not a random panel fault or a minor electronic quirk. It is a protection warning activated when the appliance detects water in its base, outside the normal washing circuit. In that situation, the machine enters safety mode, blocks normal operation, may cut off the water intake and can keep the drain pump running to prevent a larger flood.

The display may show F138, the word Waterproof, or a related service message, depending on the model. Waterproof is not simply a message chosen at random. In Miele washing machines equipped with this protection, the base of the appliance includes a lower safety tray or retention area and a sensor. How the F138 fault appears in everyday use

In some models the pump runs for a limited period; in others, it may continue operating until the appliance is disconnected or the safety condition is removed.

The programme may stop halfway through a wash, rinse or spin cycle. The laundry can remain inside with water in the drum, or the machine may enter a forced waiting phase. The appliance may seem to be switched on and functioning normally because the indicator lights and display still respond, but it will not resume washing. Drain pump and filter problems

The filter and drain-pump area deserves particular attention. A filter that has not been tightened correctly, a cover that is not seated properly or a damaged seal around the filter can create a slow escape route. The lid must close firmly and without play. An imperfect closure may not leak during the first wash, but pressure and movement can eventually expose the weakness.

The drain pump itself may also be involved. A worn pump seal, damaged housing, dirt residue, blocked impeller or foreign object can allow water to reach the base. The water can then travel beneath the front panel and collect in the lower tray. A leak originating at the door therefore may not be visible at the door itself once the cycle has stopped.

Inspect the rubber seal for cracks, folds, foreign objects, hardened areas or signs that it is no longer sitting evenly against the door. Do not assume that a dry-looking drum means the door area is not involved; the water may already have moved away from the original leak.

Detergent drawer, distribution circuit and excess foam

The detergent drawer area can cause a deceptive intermittent leak. Too much detergent, excessive foam, dirt in the distribution ducts or a restricted water path can cause water to overflow from the drawer or detergent circuit. The water may then flow down the front or inside of the cabinet and end up in the base.

This is not always a major mechanical break. It can result from a combination of pressure, water return, dirt and excess foam. Even a small excess of foam can behave like a leak in a sensitive protection system. The resulting wet marks may be intermittent, which can make the problem appear random.

Check whether the detergent drawer was overfilled, whether the correct detergent and quantity were used, and whether the drawer and its channels contain hardened detergent or residue. One-off overflow or internal water accumulation

F138 can sometimes be triggered by a one-off internal spill or overflow rather than a permanently broken part. Water may have entered the lower tray after an unusual overflow, excessive foam, an incorrectly closed filter or a temporary problem in the distribution circuit.

The machine does not distinguish between a large crack and a slow drip. It simply detects water in the safety area. For that reason, even when the event appears isolated, the base must be dried and the accessible water path inspected before the machine is used again.

Inlet system and rear connections

A poorly positioned water-supply hose, worn coupling or small leak at the rear inlet connection can also trigger the alarm. In this case, the source may be near the back of the machine while the water eventually reaches the safety tray below.

Check the inlet connection, hose position and visible rear fittings without pulling the appliance forward abruptly. If the leak is active, closing the tap or water inlet prevents the supply from continuing to feed the lower tray.

What to do immediately when F138 appears

The first priority is safety, not resetting the display. Follow this order:

  1. Stop the washing machine. Do not start another programme and do not keep pressing buttons in an attempt to force it to continue.
  2. Disconnect the appliance from the power supply. Unplugging it is important because the pump may continue trying to drain and because moisture inside the appliance creates an electrical risk.
  3. Close the water tap or inlet supply. This prevents an active leak from continuing to receive water while the appliance is being inspected.
  4. Wait for the situation to stabilise. If the pump has been running, allow it to stop after the appliance has been safely disconnected. Do not handle wet compartments while the machine is energised.

Draining and drying the lower safety tray

Why continuing to wash with the alert active is unsafe

Continuing to use the washing machine while Waterproof or F138 remains active is risky for several reasons. If the leak is still open, more water can escape and damage the floor, furniture, skirting boards or baseboards. The appliance may also continue feeding water into the lower tray during a new cycle.
