F4 Error on a Balay Induction Hob: Causes and Solutions
Code F4 is usually linked to high temperature or a faulty sensor. Learn how to check it safely.

The F4 code on a Balay induction hob usually appears when the appliance detects excessive temperature or an abnormal reading from the thermal system. Depending on the model, the warning may be connected to the sensor that monitors heat, a surface that is still too hot or a fault in the measurement circuit. For that reason, the appliance manual remains the definitive reference.
If you have a problem with your induction hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the F4 code means on a Balay hob
Induction does not heat the glass directly: it creates an electromagnetic field that transfers energy to the cookware. Even so, the glass can reach high temperatures through contact with the pan and heat accumulated during cooking. The system includes sensors to monitor this thermal level and protect both the electronics and the cooking surface.
On some models, F4 is interpreted as a hob that is too hot; on others, it points to a problem with the temperature sensor or its connection. The difference matters, because a warning that disappears after the appliance cools has a different significance from a code that returns while the hob is cold. The error behavior provides an initial clue before considering a repair.
Insufficient ventilation beneath the countertop, liquid residue on the panel, a blocked fan or an electronic fault may also play a role. If the code appears after cooking at maximum power and disappears after several minutes, residual heat may explain the issue. If it remains for hours or appears immediately after switching on, a temperature measurement problem is more likely.
How to handle the F4 error safely
Turn off all cooking zones, remove the pan and let the appliance cool completely. Do not cover the hob or place objects on it to speed up the process. Once the glass is cool to the touch, clean the panel with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. Do not use scouring pads, blades or abrasive products, as they can damage the glass or interfere with the touch sensors.
Then switch off the relevant circuit breaker for a few minutes and turn it on again. This reset may clear a temporary warning caused by an incorrect reading, but it will not repair a failed component. If F4 returns while the hob is cold, avoid repeatedly disconnecting it: the persistent code means that a diagnosis is needed.
Taking the hob apart to inspect cables, sensors or power modules is not recommended. Even when unplugged, some components may retain an electrical charge, and an incorrectly handled connection can make the fault worse. Continuity testing, the thermal sensor and the electronics should be handled by a qualified technician. Electrical safety must come before any home repair attempt.
When a technical inspection is advisable
Professional assistance is particularly advisable if the code appears on every zone, if the hob switches off, if the fan does not work or if the circuit breaker trips when it starts. It should also be inspected when there is a burning smell, dark marks, unusual noises or visible glass damage. These symptoms may indicate a fault beyond the sensor.
The technician will check the exact model, connections, ventilation, thermal sensor and electronic modules. In some cases, correcting a contact or replacing a sensor is enough; in others, the manufacturer may recommend replacing an entire module. The compatible part depends on the exact hob reference, so components should not be purchased based only on their external appearance.
An isolated F4 after intensive cooking may disappear without consequences once the appliance cools. A recurring warning, however, should not be ignored, even if the hob continues to work partially. The difference between a temporary thermal alert and an electronic fault lies in how often it returns, when it appears and which symptoms accompany it: small signals that together reveal the appliance’s real condition.
