The F17 code on a Balay TW 5512 washer-dryer is usually linked to a problem with the water supply. Although the appliance may wash normally, drying can also require water to condense moisture. A blocked filter, a tap with poor flow or a kinked hose can therefore stop the programme shortly after it starts.

What error F17 indicates on the Balay TW 5512

On this appliance family, F17 usually appears when the machine cannot take in water within the expected time. This does not necessarily mean that the pump has failed: the cause may be in the household supply or in the filling circuit. That distinction matters because a simple inspection may solve the issue without removing the cabinet.

The fact that washing finishes normally does not rule out this cause. During drying, the washer-dryer may open the inlet valve to feed the condensation system and remove moisture from the warm air. If the flow is insufficient, the programme may stop after one minute, particularly when the appliance is installed in a closed space with limited ventilation.

The TW 5512 belongs to an older generation, and messages may vary according to the exact control-panel version. It is therefore worth checking the complete model on the rating plate, usually located inside the door frame or on the rear panel. This identification prevents applying a code interpretation from another series.

Checks to make before calling a technician

With the appliance switched off, unplugged and the tap closed, check that the inlet hose is not crushed behind the cabinet. The valve should be fully open and provide a steady flow. A practical test is to place the hose end in a container, open the tap for a few seconds and observe the flow; if very little water comes out, the problem may be in the plumbing.

The small filter at the inlet connection can collect sand, limescale or particles from the pipes. To clean it, shut off the water, release the pressure, remove the hose and take out the mesh carefully without bending it. Do not immerse or handle an AquaStop device if the model has one, because it contains electrical components.

Then check that the door closes properly, that the drain is not blocked and that the pump filter contains no lint or coins. During drying cycles, the tap must remain open, even when no washing cycle is running. Leaving space around the appliance also helps: a boxed-in installation can raise the temperature and worsen drying, although it would not usually explain F17 by itself.

When the fault points to an internal failure

If the water supply is correct, the filters are clean and the code returns, the inlet valve, the water-level sensor or the wiring may be involved. The inlet valve is the component that opens the water passage when powered; over time it can become partially blocked or stop activating. The sensor tells the electronics that the required level has been reached.

An additional check is to run a rinse programme and observe whether water enters normally. If F17 appears only when drying is selected, the issue may be limited to the condensation circuit or the control of that phase. If it also appears during washing, a general inlet restriction or a worn valve becomes more likely.

Do not bypass sensors, remove the control board or work while the appliance is connected to the mains. A washer-dryer combines water, electricity and hot surfaces, so professional intervention is appropriate when external checks do not solve the issue. Note when the code appears, whether it occurs only during drying and which checks have been completed; this helps speed up diagnosis and avoid unnecessary part replacements.

A diagnosis that starts with the water supply

F17 should not automatically be treated as a serious failure. On the Balay TW 5512, the described behaviour first fits insufficient water entry during drying, but the exact code should be checked against the appliance variant. Inspecting the tap, hose, filters, drain and ventilation helps distinguish a maintenance issue from an internal fault.

When all those checks are correct and drying still stops, the repair requires testing the valve, sensor and electronic signals. Caution is more useful than repeated resets: switching the machine off and on may temporarily clear the warning, but it does not fix the underlying cause.
