F04 error on Balay TW 860: causes and safe solutions
Find out why F04 appears and what to check before contacting a repair service.

The F04 code on a Balay TW 860 usually appears when water cannot leave the appliance at the expected speed. The cycle may stop, leave clothes soaked or prevent spinning. In practice, the first suspects are the filter, drain hose and pump, although the cause may also be found in the wiring or electronic system.

What the F04 code means on the Balay TW 860
F04 is not a cosmetic fault or a simple maintenance reminder: it indicates that the machine detects insufficient water drainage. The appliance control expects the water level to fall after washing or before spinning. If the sensor still detects water in the drum, it stops the program to prevent the door from unlocking while water remains inside.
The exact meaning may vary between Balay families and revisions, so check the full appliance number on the rating plate. In TW series models, however, the link between F04 and the drainage circuit is the most consistent interpretation when the code appears with retained water or when spinning does not start.
The most common causes of the fault
The simplest cause is a blocked pump filter containing coins, buttons, lint or small objects left in pockets. The pump impeller may also be jammed. A humming sound without water leaving usually points to this issue; no sound at all may indicate that the pump is not receiving power or that its motor is damaged.
The drain hose deserves an equally careful inspection. A sharp bend, crushing behind the appliance or a blocked trap can reduce flow. The outlet should be installed approximately between 60 and 100 centimeters high, without placing its end inside standing water. Excess detergent can also create foam and residue that hinder drainage.
What you can check without dismantling the washer
Before doing anything, switch off the machine, unplug it and close the tap. If water remains in the drum, place towels and a container under the filter cover because a substantial amount may come out. Loosen the filter slowly, remove debris and check that the impeller turns with slight resistance, never by force.
Then inspect the entire hose to the drain and clean the trap if it is connected under the sink. Refit the filter and run a drain or spin program without laundry. Do not force the door or tilt the appliance sharply: retained water can reach electrical components and worsen the fault.
When the problem needs technical assistance
If F04 returns with a clean filter and clear hose, there may be a fault in the pump, the pressure switch that monitors water level, the wiring or the control board. A worn pump may drain intermittently, while a defective sensor may report an incorrect level even when the drum is empty.
Electrical checks and part replacement should be carried out with the appliance disconnected and by a qualified professional. Bypassing sensors or powering the pump directly is not advisable. A correct diagnosis avoids replacing parts at random and helps preserve the washer-dryer’s electrical safety and watertightness.
Careful drainage prevents the code from returning
Cleaning the filter every few months, emptying pockets and avoiding an overloaded drum reduces residue buildup. It also helps to use the detergent dose recommended by the manufacturer and leave the door slightly open after washing so the seal can dry.
F04 does not always mean that the Balay TW 860 has reached the end of its service life. It is often an early warning of a blocked drainage circuit. A methodical, careful check focused first on obstructions helps distinguish a simple incident from a fault requiring professional repair.
