Error 28 on a Balay washing machine: causes and safe fixes

The code 28 may be caused by the load, shock absorbers or an imbalance sensor.

The E28 code on a Balay washing machine is usually linked to incorrect imbalance detection during the spin cycle or to a problem with the sensor that monitors vibrations. On some models it appears when laundry is concentrated on one side of the drum; on others, when there is a fault in the detection system. For that reason, the exact meaning depends on the model and its manual.

What does error E28 mean on a Balay washing machine?

The washing machine monitors the drum movement before and during the spin cycle. When it detects abnormal vibrations or an unbalanced load, it may reduce the speed, stop the program and show E28 to prevent impacts on the tub, damage to the shock absorbers or movement of the appliance.

The warning can appear after washing a heavy item, such as a large towel, blanket or rug, especially when the rest of the drum is nearly empty. It may also occur when several garments become tangled into a compact mass. In that situation, it does not necessarily mean that a part has broken: the system is acting as a protection.

How to check and clear the warning

Turn off the washing machine and wait until the drum has stopped completely. If there is still water inside, do not force the door open. Then spread the laundry out by hand and remove some of the load if the drum is too full. A test with garments of different weights and sizes can show whether the code disappears when a gentle spin cycle is started.

It is also worth checking that the appliance is firmly positioned on the floor. All four feet must rest securely and the machine should not rock when you press its corners. An uneven floor can amplify vibrations and cause the sensor to interpret movement as a fault. Do not place folded cardboard or unstable objects under the feet.

If E28 appears again even with a small load and the machine is level, the cause may be the shock absorbers, a loose counterweight, the wiring or the imbalance sensor. Worn shock absorbers usually cause sharp knocks and excessive drum movement; checking them requires removing panels and is not recommended for anyone without appliance repair experience.

When to stop using the washing machine

Stop the appliance if the drum bangs heavily, the washing machine moves, a burning smell appears or the code is accompanied by metallic noises. Disconnect it from the power supply before any external inspection and close the water tap if you notice a leak. An error that returns after balancing the load needs a specific diagnosis, because repeated high-speed spins can worsen the wear.

Balay uses different electronic platforms, and E28 is not interpreted identically on every appliance. On a washer-dryer it may be connected with imbalance control, while other models display different codes for motor, drainage or water inlet problems. The appliance reference, usually found inside the door frame or near the filter, allows you to consult the correct manual and avoid replacing parts based on guesswork.

A warning that protects the drum

Error 28 does not always indicate a serious fault: it is often the washing machine’s safety response to a poorly distributed load. Rearranging the laundry, reducing the weight and levelling the appliance are the sensible first checks. If the message persists across several programs, the issue is no longer simply the distribution of garments and the mechanical or electronic system should be inspected.
