Removing the tray, washing it under the tap, and scrubbing its internal channels prevents that paste from returning to the wash circuit. In many homes, it is one of the most overlooked parts, even though it holds a good share of the residue that later ends up smelling damp.

It is also worth checking the compartment where the drawer fits. That narrow, dark space can collect residue that hardens over time and eventually blocks the proper flow of water. A damp cloth and a small brush are enough to remove surface dirt, always patiently, without forcing parts or pushing residue further inside.

4. Check and clean the drain filter

If that filter is not cleaned regularly, the appliance works under strain and dirt returns to the washing system.

Before opening it, it is best to place a towel or a container under the lower front area, because residual water may still come out. Then the filter is carefully removed, the trapped debris is taken out, and it is rinsed under the tap. It is also useful to check that the cover closes properly and that no lint remains stuck to the frame. The last step closes the job and gives meaning to the rest. Moisture takes very little to settle in; a closed door and some leftover soap are enough for the inside to smell stale again.

It is also worth choosing the right amount of detergent. Too much does not clean better; on the contrary, it leaves sticky residue that adheres to the drum, the seal, and the outlet channel. That layer, invisible at first, eventually traps dirt like a fine mesh. Less foam does not mean less cleaning, but more precise cleaning.

Frequency matters as much as technique. A washing machine that runs several times a week benefits from more regular cleaning, while occasional use allows the routine to be spaced out a bit more. Even so, checking the seal, drawer, and filter should not depend on an ideal calendar, but on what the machine itself reveals through odors, stains, or drainage that is slower than normal.
