A Xiaomi scooter that loses speed is often signaling a specific issue: a low or worn battery, underinflated tires, a rubbing brake, a restricted riding mode or a throttle fault. Reduced power does not always mean that the motor has failed, but the vehicle should be checked before continued use, especially if it also gets hot, vibrates or emits beeps.

The issues that reduce speed most often

The battery is the first component to check. Xiaomi models deliver less power when the charge level drops because the available voltage decreases and the controller protects the cells. An aging battery may show a seemingly normal percentage and still suffer a voltage drop when accelerating or climbing. If speed falls even after a full charge, the battery drains unusually fast or the scooter shuts down under load, it may be degraded.

Riding conditions also matter. The rider’s weight, a steep hill, headwind and cold weather reduce performance without indicating a fault. Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance; the feeling is similar to cycling with a flat tire. A wheel that does not spin freely, however, may indicate an over-tight brake, a damaged bearing or accumulated dirt.

Before removing any part, spin each wheel with the scooter switched off. They should move smoothly without rubbing or sudden stops. Also check that the brake lever returns fully and that the disc does not continuously touch the pads. A partially engaged brake can limit acceleration and make the controller reduce current delivery as a safety measure.

Settings, throttle and warning signs

In the Xiaomi Home app, check the selected riding mode and make sure pedestrian mode or a speed limit is not enabled. Some models also require initial activation and may operate with restrictions until registration is complete. The app can show battery status and, depending on the model, detect warnings that are not clearly displayed on the dashboard.

The throttle should move smoothly and return to its position without sticking. If it responds late, works intermittently or stops responding when the handlebar moves, the issue may involve the sensor, cable or connector. The brake sensor can create a similar effect: if it continuously sends a braking signal, the scooter may turn on but will not accelerate normally. Do not bypass these safety systems, because a modification can cause unexpected acceleration or remove an important protection.

Beeps and error codes help distinguish an electronic restriction from a mechanical problem. Warnings related to the throttle, brake, motor, battery or communication with the controller require specific inspection. After heavy rain, puddles or excessive water during cleaning, moisture can affect connectors and circuit boards. Turn the scooter off, do not charge it while wet and let it dry completely before testing it again.

When to inspect the motor, controller or battery

If the wheels spin freely, tire pressure is correct, the brake does not rub and the riding mode is properly configured, the cause may be electrical. Hall sensors inside the motor report its rotational position to the controller; a fault can cause jerking, weak power or error messages. The controller regulates current and may restrict it when it detects excessive temperature, abnormal voltage or faulty communication with the battery.

Opening the deck to measure cells, repair a BMS or replace MOSFETs requires electrical knowledge and appropriate tools. A damaged lithium battery can release significant energy and start a fire if handled incorrectly. When there is an unusual smell, swelling, intense heat, burned wiring or shutdowns while riding, stop using the scooter and take it to a qualified repair service.

Changing the firmware to remove limits is not a safe or advisable fix. It can cause incompatibilities, communication errors and safety problems, as well as affect compliance with applicable regulations. The safest diagnosis begins with charging, wheels, brakes and settings, and only then moves toward electronics. A scooter that regains speed smoothly without overheating is more reliable than one forced beyond its original parameters.

Lost speed can also be a warning

Regular maintenance prevents minor resistance from becoming an expensive failure. Checking Xiaomi’s recommended tire pressure, keeping connectors clean, inspecting screws and brakes, and storing the vehicle in a dry place help preserve performance. The battery should be charged with a compatible adapter and should not remain completely discharged for months. Useful power depends as much on electrical condition as on the parts that remain in contact with the ground.

When the problem appears suddenly together with beeps or shutdowns, the priority is to identify the code and avoid continued riding. When it develops gradually, it often points to wear, low tire pressure or reduced battery capacity. Distinguishing between these situations prevents random part replacement and helps restore the Xiaomi’s operation with a proportionate repair.
