The extractor hood works quietly every day, but its efficiency depends on a part that accumulates grease, steam, and odor almost without anyone noticing. The time to change or clean the filter is not measured only by the calendar: it is also revealed by reduced suction, harsher noise, and that smell that lingers in the kitchen after cooking.
In a home kitchen, a saturated filter does more than reduce performance. It also forces the motor to work harder, dirties nearby surfaces sooner, and can become a source of grease that is difficult to remove. The correct frequency depends on the type of filter, the hood model, and, above all, how much and how intensely you cook.

Why the filter makes a difference in performance
A clean filter acts as the first defense between the kitchen’s laden air and the inside of the hood. Its job is to trap grease, solid particles, and, depending on the system, part of the odors as well. When that mesh or absorbent material becomes saturated, the air meets more resistance and extraction immediately loses effectiveness.
That deterioration is often noticed in the cooktop area before it is noticed in the appliance itself. The kitchen takes longer to clear, steam hangs in the air, and grease ends up settling on cabinets, tiles, and handles. The hood no longer cleans the air at the same speed, and the problem worsens if you cook daily, fry often, or use high heat with very hot pans.
There is also a less visible but important effect: the system’s extra effort. The hood needs to move air with fewer obstacles; if the filter is clogged, airflow decreases and the motor works under worse conditions. The different filter types do not age the same way
Not all filters perform the same function or age at the same rate. In home extractor hoods, metal grease filters are common, usually made of aluminum or stainless steel, and they are responsible for capturing grease particles. These do not need to be replaced often; they are cleaned and put back in place, as long as the mesh remains in good condition.
In recirculating hoods, where the air returns to the kitchen instead of being vented outdoors, the activated carbon filter comes into play. Its job is to absorb odors, and here there is indeed a limited lifespan. When the carbon becomes saturated, it stops neutralizing odors and the hood loses an essential part of its function. It does not behave like a washable sponge; it is used up over time.
There are also disposable filters made of paper or synthetic fiber, less common but present in some basic or older models. These behave like true consumables: they are installed, trap grease for a while, and then are thrown away. Their lifespan is usually shorter, but replacing them is simple and inexpensive.
Real timelines depending on how the kitchen is used
The most useful guideline is simple: metal filters are usually cleaned every one to three months, although in heavily used kitchens it is wise to check their condition sooner. If the household cooks little, the interval can be extended somewhat, but visual inspection is still essential. A mesh that already looks dull, sticky, or has an obvious greasy layer is asking for cleaning, even if the calendar says otherwise.
For activated carbon filters, the usual range is narrower. The norm is to replace them every three to six months, and in many households the practical midpoint is around four months. When there is frequent frying, griddling, long stews, or daily use of the hood, that duration may be too short. Retained odor is, in practice, the clearest sign that the filter is worn out.
Disposable paper or synthetic fiber filters have an even shorter useful life. They are often changed every one to two months, or even sooner if they darken quickly or show visible buildup. They are sensitive to grease load and cooking frequency, so a heavily used kitchen may require them to be replaced more often than expected.
These ranges should be understood as references, not as a fixed rule. A household that cooks little and uses the hood at moderate power does not wear out the filter the same way as a kitchen where frying happens several times a week. The type of recipe leaves its mark: the gentle steam from vegetables does not load the filter the same way as the splatter from deep frying.
The signs that tell you it is already time to act
The hood usually gives warning before it truly fails. One of the most obvious clues is a loss of extraction power: smoke takes longer to disappear and the kitchen stays steamy after cooking. Another common sign is persistent odor, especially when the room still smells fried even with the hood running.
The noise also changes. When the filter is heavily loaded, the suction no longer sounds uniform and the machine may emit a tighter hum or a more strained tone. It is not a symptom exclusive to the filter, but it is a useful warning. If the hood seems to work harder to achieve less, it deserves an immediate check.
Grease on the front of the hood, on the nearby ceiling, or on nearby cabinets usually appears when retention is no longer adequate. A sticky film may also show up on the controls or on the underside of the appliance. In that scenario, the filter is not failing in isolation: it is letting through what it should be capturing.
In recirculating models, odor becomes a very reliable gauge. If after cooking the room keeps an oily undertone or a closed-in kitchen feel, the activated carbon is probably exhausted. Sometimes changing the filter is not about fixing a fault, but about a natural wear process that leaves no shortcuts.
How the procedure changes depending on the filter type
Handling a hood does not require advanced technique, but it does require order. Before touching any part, the appliance must be unplugged and allowed to cool if it has been in use. In most models, the metal grease filters are released with a tab or clip, pulled out downward, and removed without forcing. If the dirt is very stuck on, it is best to soak them in hot water and degreaser before scrubbing.
Metal filters are dishwasher-safe in many cases, as long as the manufacturer allows it. Washing helps loosen grease embedded in the mesh, although it may darken the exterior finish without necessarily affecting performance. The important thing is that once clean, they are completely dry before being reinstalled. Trapped moisture does not help performance and can leave strange odors.
The activated carbon filter is replaced, not cleaned. It is usually clipped in place, secured with clips, or held with a simple twist system. The used one is removed and the new one is installed following the correct orientation. A poor fit reduces its effectiveness and can cause vibrations or small leaks of unfiltered air.
With disposable filters, the operation is usually even quicker. The material is cut to the required size if it comes in a roll, placed on its support, and secured so it does not shift with the airflow. Visual condition is what matters: if the material is blackened or soaked with grease, replacement is no longer up for debate.
What happens if you wait too long to replace it
Letting time pass has cumulative effects. The hood loses its ability to trap particles, grease spreads throughout the kitchen, and the inside of the appliance becomes coated with residues that are difficult to remove. Later cleaning costs more, because the dirt does not stay only in the filter, but moves on to grilles, inner walls, and accessible ducts.
There is also a safety issue that should not be minimized. Grease is flammable, and although a domestic hood does not operate under extreme conditions, continued buildup increases the risk in the event of intense heat or a high flame. This is not alarmism, but rather an understanding that a saturated mesh is a less safe system than one checked on time.
Another common effect is premature wear of the motor or ventilation system. When airflow is restricted, the machine compensates by working harder and the overall feeling is of a tired appliance. In the long run, that can lead to avoidable repairs and poor performance that is not fixed by turning the speed up to maximum.
How to extend its useful life without waiting for it to fail
Routine matters more than one-off fixes. Cleaning metal filters regularly is the most effective way to keep the hood in shape for years. There is no need to turn it into a complicated task: reasonable intervals, a mild degreaser, and the habit of checking the mesh condition instead of relying only on the calendar are enough.
It also helps to cook with less splatter when possible. Covering pans, controlling the heat, and using the hood from the start of cooking reduces the load the filter receives. Less grease suspended in the air means less saturation, and that extends both cleaning intervals and the time until replacement.
In very active kitchens, a monthly visual check is practical even when the manual does not require such frequency. The eye quickly notices the difference between a filter that is still usable and one that already has a sticky layer or a persistent dark gray tone. If the metallic finish has lost its shine and the mesh looks clogged, there is already enough information.
Maintaining the rest of the hood also matters. The outer surface, the slots, and the suction area collect grease aerosols that then return to the filter. Keeping the whole unit clean reduces the system’s overall load and helps air circulate better. The hood works as a whole, not as isolated parts.

Choosing the right replacement avoids frustration and returns. The first step is to identify whether the hood vents to the outside or works by recirculation. That difference determines whether you need a washable metal filter, activated carbon, or a disposable consumable. It is not enough for it to look similar; it must match in size, shape, and fastening system.
The manufacturer’s reference, the exact model, and the measurements of the old filter are decisive data. In many cases, the replacement has a specific part number or limited compatibility. Forcing in an unsuitable part can leave gaps, vibrations, or mediocre filtration. Precision here is more like a key and its lock than a universal solution.
In models with regenerable carbon, the decision changes slightly. These filters can be cleaned and reactivated following the manufacturer’s instructions, often with specific heat or washing cycles. Their lifespan can be extended considerably, even up to several years under proper conditions, but not all models support this. The product label is the authority, and it is worth reading carefully before assuming that any carbon filter can be regenerated.
Anyone who cooks often and uses a lot of oil should regard the filter as part of normal kitchen consumption, just like baking paper or dishwasher tablets. It is not a minor detail.
