A rear light that remains on after switching off a Xiaomi electric scooter usually points to a fault in the power circuit, the power button or the battery. The scooter should not be left in this condition for hours: although the LED consumes little power, an electrical fault can drain the battery or worsen because of moisture and vibration.

The first check should distinguish between a steady light, a light that becomes brighter when braking and a lamp that flashes. Each behavior suggests a different cause, but all of them mean you should not ride at night until the lighting system has been confirmed to work correctly.

What it means when the rear lamp stays on

On Xiaomi M365, Essential, 1S and Pro 2 models, the rear light is connected to the electronic system and also works as a brake light. When the brake lever is pressed, the lamp may become brighter or change its pattern. If it remains on with the scooter switched off, the problem is usually not the LED itself, but the electrical command that should cut the power.

A pinched or partly broken wire around the stem can create an intermittent contact. The connector near the battery may also be loose, oxidized or contaminated by water. On M365 family models, the rear wiring is exposed to heavy vibration and can deteriorate without visible external damage.

Common causes and safe checks

First switch the scooter off with the button and check whether the display also remains active. If the display stays on, inspect the power button, the wire running down the stem, the controller or the mobile app if the model is locked. An app lock should not physically keep the rear lamp powered, but it can make diagnosis confusing because it restricts the scooter functions.

If only the rear lamp remains lit, look for moisture, impact damage around the mudguard and signs of strained wiring without dismantling anything. Do not pull the wires or put liquids or solvents into the display. Opening the bottom cover while the battery is connected is also unsafe: a short circuit in a lithium battery can cause serious damage. A full charge can rule out insufficient voltage, although a low battery alone does not explain a lamp that stays fixed after shutdown.

A lamp that becomes brighter when braking may indicate a power-management fault or an incorrect brake-lever reading. Check that the lever returns fully to its position and that there is no dirt around the mechanism. If the lamp remains on without touching the brake, the sensor, wiring and controller should be inspected.

When the wiring or battery needs repair

Replacing the LED module only solves the issue when the lamp is burned out, cracked or visibly damaged. Changing it without measuring the power supply may leave the real fault untouched. A technician can test continuity, voltage and current with suitable instruments, as well as locate a broken wire inside the steering tube or near the rear connector.

The battery deserves special attention if the scooter has lost range, switches off while riding, fails to charge normally or the light changes brightness unpredictably. On some Xiaomi models, the lamp receives power from the main electrical assembly; therefore a battery or controller fault can first appear as a lighting problem. Do not attempt to repair a lithium battery by replacing cells without specialist knowledge.

While the lamp will not switch off, keep the scooter in a dry place, do not leave it connected to the charger and avoid disconnecting the battery as a routine solution. That maneuver can conceal a short circuit and damage connectors. A professional inspection is especially advisable after rain, a fall or recent mudguard work, as these situations often affect the rear cable.

The rear lamp is not merely decorative: it helps other road users see the scooter and signals braking. A light that stays on when the vehicle is switched off shows that the electronics are not operating as intended, even if the scooter still moves normally. Finding the cause is safer than simply replacing the LED.
