How to classify dishwasher symbols before taking action

Salt symbol

Its role is to soften the water and reduce limescale, something particularly important in areas with high water hardness.
When the salt runs out, the dishwasher may continue to operate for several washes, but the result can gradually deteriorate. Glasses may develop a cloudy or whitish film, stainless steel can lose its brightness, and limescale can accumulate inside the tub, filters, ducts, and water-softening system. Over time, the machine may work under greater strain and leave mineral traces on every load.
Salt consumption depends on water hardness and not only on how frequently the appliance is used. A home that runs only a few loads may consume more salt than another with heavy use if it is located in an area with very hard water. The same warning may therefore appear more or less often depending on the neighborhood, city, building, or the hardness setting programmed into the dishwasher.
How to refill the salt reservoir safely
The salt reservoir should not simply be filled and forgotten. When the indicator lights up, open the dishwasher, locate the reservoir at the bottom of the tub, and refill it with dishwasher-specific regenerating salt according to the model’s instructions. Do not substitute ordinary table salt or detergent, because their composition and granulation are not designed for the water-softening system.
- Open the dishwasher and remove the lower basket if it obstructs access to the reservoir.
- Unscrew or open the salt-container cap.
- Fill the reservoir with the recommended dishwasher salt.
- Clean up any salt that spills around the opening or remains on the tub floor.
- Close the cap securely so that water cannot escape from the reservoir.
- When possible, run a short cycle or a prewash after refilling to remove salt residue and reduce the risk of corrosion or deposits in the tub.

Multifunction tablets sometimes contain rinse aid, but that does not always provide enough assistance in hard-water areas or with loads containing a large amount of plastic. The dishwasher’s dedicated rinse-aid dispenser may still be useful, particularly when water marks or slow drying appear.
Faucet or water-inlet symbol
The faucet symbol is one of the most important icons because it can indicate a genuine operational problem. Power, start, pause, delay, and child-lock symbols
On/off symbol
The classic on/off symbol is normally a circle with a vertical line. Its location and behavior vary between models. On some machines, a brief touch activates the appliance; on others, the button must be held down for several seconds to switch the power supply on or off.

Start and pause symbol

Opening the door is not equally safe or possible at every stage. Delayed-start symbol

If the dishwasher appears not to start immediately, check whether delayed start has been selected before assuming there is an electrical or control failure. Child lock symbol
The child-lock function may be represented by a face, key, or padlock. It prevents accidental button presses, changes to the selected program, and in some models the opening of the door during operation.
It is useful not only in homes with small children. It also prevents accidental activation when cleaning the front, leaning against the panel, or walking past the appliance. When activated, the panel can appear unresponsive, but the cause is not necessarily electronic failure: the controls may simply be locked.
Phase indicators: prewash, washing, drying, and end of cycle

Brush or washing symbol

If the brush remains on while water is circulating and the program is progressing, it is simply a status indicator. If it appears together with an abnormal stop, repeated beeps, a frozen display, or another warning, check the door closure, selected program, water supply, filter, and the specific instructions for the model.
Prewash symbol
The prewash indicator points to an initial rinse designed to soften dried-on residue, remove loose food, or prevent odors when a load has been waiting for several hours. It is not a complete wash and should not be confused with a full cleaning cycle.
Prewash makes sense when dishes have been left in the appliance for a long time or contain dried food that could otherwise harden before the main cycle. It is a short preparation phase that makes the later wash more effective.
Drying symbol
A sun, upward lines, a crossed-out drop, or a cloud of heat may indicate that the dishwasher is drying, that drying has been extended, or that an additional drying option is active. Drying is frequently misunderstood because a dishwasher can clean perfectly while still leaving moisture on certain materials.
Glass, porcelain, plastic, and containers with cavities do not release water at the same speed. Plastic retains moisture more easily than glass, and a cup or storage box positioned without enough ventilation may remain wet even after a normal program.
End-of-cycle symbol
End-of-program indicators vary widely. They may appear as an arrow, a vertical bar, a switched-off clock, a completed-cycle symbol, or a light projected onto the floor in built-in models. They tell the user that the program has finished and that the door can normally be opened safely.
Some dishwashers switch the signal off after a few minutes to save energy, so the light may not remain visible until the user returns to the kitchen. In Bosch built-in models, TimeLight can project the remaining time or cycle status onto the floor. This keeps the front of the appliance visually clean while allowing the user to see whether the program is still running without opening the door.
Dishwasher programs and their visual language

Automatic program
The automatic program may be identified by the word Auto, a generic symbol, or a plate with sensor-related markings. Its sensors estimate the level of dirt and adapt temperature, duration, water use, and sometimes the intensity of the wash.
Bosch models commonly identify this cycle as Auto 45–65 °C. It is useful for mixed everyday loads in which some dishes are lightly soiled and others need more attention. However, automatic sensing does not eliminate the need for judgment: a burnt pan or heavily dried residue may still require an intensive program or pre-treatment.
Intensive program
The intensive symbol is often a saucepan, pot, steam lines, or a higher-temperature graphic. It is designed for pots, pans, casseroles, trays, dried-on food, and grease that has hardened on the surface.
Bosch’s Intensive 70 °C program combines higher temperature and stronger water pressure. It is effective when dishes have stubborn or burnt-on residue, but it is not the right choice for fine crystal, sensitive plastics, or materials that do not tolerate high heat.
Quick and one-hour programs
The quick program usually appears with a clock, arrow, or minute indicator. Its objective is to clean a lightly soiled load in a short time, not to achieve the same result as an intensive cycle. It is useful for glasses, dishes used lightly, or situations in which the load needs to be refreshed quickly.
Many users mistake a quick program for a universal cycle, but its limitation is clear: the less embedded the dirt, the better the result. Food that has dried for hours or grease that has hardened may remain after a short cycle.
Bosch models may include a 1-hour program, designed to balance speed and an acceptable finish for everyday dishes. Quick 45 °C is more appropriate for lightly soiled or delicate items, while Short 60 °C increases intensity somewhat while keeping the program agile. Depending on the model, the available drying behavior and options can differ.
Glass and delicate programs
The delicate or glass symbol is normally a goblet, wine glass, or stylized glass. This program reduces the aggressiveness of the wash and treats fragile items more gently. The temperature is generally lower, and the drying phase is adjusted to reduce thermal stress and protect the finish.
Bosch models may offer Glass 40 °C. It is intended for fine glassware and sensitive pieces, helping to reduce sudden temperature changes and extending drying. Even with this program, delicate items should be loaded securely and separated so that they do not strike one another.
Intensive Zone
The Intensive Zone function is useful when the load combines heavily soiled pots or trays with more delicate dishes. It increases pressure and temperature in the lower basket, where pans and casserole dishes are normally placed, while the upper basket receives gentler treatment.
This makes it possible to combine different types of dishes in one load instead of dividing them into two cycles. It is a practical solution for households that want to use space efficiently, although the items in each basket must still be suitable for the chosen program.
Half Load
The Half Load function adapts consumption to a smaller quantity of dishes. It is useful when only one basket is partly filled and waiting for a full load would be inconvenient. The exact reduction in water, electricity, or duration depends on the model and program.
Half Load should not automatically be treated as a reason to run the appliance more frequently. Its advantage is greatest when a smaller load genuinely needs to be washed sooner and the selected model adjusts consumption appropriately.
Drying, extra shine, and the final result
Drying is one of the most misunderstood stages of the dishwasher. A sun, heat-wave lines, a crossed-out drop, or a similar icon may announce that the machine is drying, that the phase has been extended, or that a special drying option has been activated.
ExtraDry
ExtraDry intensifies moisture removal by extending the final phase and, depending on the model, raising the temperature of the last rinse. It is especially useful for plastic containers, food-storage boxes, wide bowls, and objects with shapes that retain water.
ExtraDry does not clean the dishes more thoroughly. Its purpose is to leave less residual moisture. Plastic can still require more attention than glass because it retains water and does not heat in the same way.
Extra Shine
An extra-shine icon may promise brighter glasses and fewer water marks. Its purpose is technical rather than merely aesthetic: it improves water drainage and reinforces drying on surfaces where individual drops become visible spots.
Bosch’s Extra Shine option can add water and extend drying to reduce marks and improve the final appearance of glassware. The exact effect depends on water hardness, the amount of rinse aid, how the glasses are positioned, and whether the load is overcrowded.
PerfectDry and zeolite drying
PerfectDry is one of Bosch’s recognizable drying solutions. Compatible models use zeolites, minerals that help convert moisture into heat during the drying stage. The practical advantage is especially noticeable with plastics and containers that would otherwise come out damp.
PerfectDry reduces the need for towels and manual waiting, but it does not make loading technique irrelevant. A cup placed upside down without enough space to ventilate, a container with a deep cavity, hard water, insufficient rinse aid, or a tightly packed basket can still produce a disappointing result.
The combination of rinse aid, correct program selection, suitable loading, and the appropriate drying option remains important even when an advanced system is present. Not everything depends on the most visible technology.
Bosch connectivity, security, and convenience symbols
Home Connect
Current Bosch dishwashers may include a Home Connect symbol for wireless connectivity. This function links the appliance to the Bosch app and can allow the user to monitor the cycle, select programs, save preferences, or manage the dishwasher remotely, depending on the model and account configuration.
The connectivity symbol is not a water or maintenance alarm. It is the gateway to a second layer of control, useful when the user wants to check whether a cycle has finished without going to the kitchen or launch a specific option from a phone.

Favorite function

This function acts as a shortcut. Instead of selecting the same program, temperature, drying option, and additional functions each time, the user can recall the saved combination. The exact saving procedure differs between models, so the manual should be consulted when the icon is unfamiliar or the setting does not appear to respond.
TimeLight and built-in models
Built-in Bosch dishwashers may use TimeLight to project the remaining time or current cycle status onto the floor. Since the controls are hidden behind the door, this projection provides information without requiring the user to open the appliance.

Half Load, extra drying, and shine options
Half Load adapts a cycle to a smaller quantity of utensils. ExtraDry extends or intensifies moisture removal, especially for plastic. Extra Shine adds water and extends drying to reduce marks on glassware. The availability and exact behavior of these functions vary according to the Bosch model.

How to interpret a symbol that is not familiar
The key is to separate universal symbols from those specific to each brand. Power, salt, rinse aid, faucet, start, pause, Eco, extra drying, and child lock appear in almost all product families, although their drawings may differ slightly.
A drop may be rounder or more angular, a faucet may look schematic or almost literal, and a clock may show numbers or only an outline. Bosch models add their own icons for programs and functions, so a symbol that looks similar to one from another brand may not have precisely the same behavior.
When the panel shows a light that you do not recognize, begin with the context of use:
- If the appliance is working normally, the symbol may describe the current phase.
