Técnico revisando el cableado del motor ante el error 12 en un patinete Xiaomi

The code 12 on a Xiaomi scooter identifies an abnormality in motor phase B. It is usually not a simple low-battery warning: the system detects that one of the three electrical lines powering the motor is not working normally and may limit acceleration or prevent the scooter from moving.

What exactly code 12 means

In Xiaomi’s warning system, the formats 1-2 and 12 represent the same diagnosis: a fault in motor phase B. Phases A, B and C are the three circuits switched by the controller to create the magnetic field that turns the wheel. When one is interrupted, has abnormal resistance or develops a short circuit, the electronics register the error.

That is why the scooter may turn on and show battery level, lights or Bluetooth connection, yet fail to accelerate normally. In some cases the motor vibrates, loses power or makes an irregular sound; in others, the controller cuts power as a protective measure. The warning alone does not prove that the entire motor has failed: it may also come from a damaged cable, a loose connector or moisture.

Common causes of a phase B fault

The simplest cause is poor contact in the wiring connecting the motor to the controller. Pulls, vibration and movement around the stem can damage insulation or loosen a terminal. It may also appear after riding through heavy rain, deep puddles or cleaning the vehicle with pressurized water, because moisture encourages corrosion in connectors and circuit boards.

If the error appeared after an impact, a puncture or work on the wheel, inspect the cable coming out of the axle first. A conductor may be pinched or partly cut. When the scooter has operated under heavy load, on long climbs or with a dragging brake, the motor winding can overheat and become damaged. Less frequently, the problem lies in the controller’s power stage, which no longer sends the correct current to that phase.

Safe checks before repairing

Turn off the scooter, unplug the charger and let it cool completely. Inspect the motor cable from the wheel to the base without pulling it or turning the wheel sharply. Look for cuts, crushed sections, burnt plastic, moisture or a connector that appears displaced. If water was involved, do not keep switching it on: electricity and moisture can worsen the damage.

A visual inspection can reveal an external problem, but confirming the affected phase requires measuring continuity and resistance with suitable tools, as well as checking the motor and controller. Opening the base without experience exposes the battery and its connections, and an accidental bridge can cause serious damage. Avoid clearing the warning with apps, installing modified firmware or replacing parts at random, because the electrical fault will remain.

When to stop using the scooter

Stop using the scooter if the motor becomes excessively hot, smells of burnt plastic, makes clicking sounds or locks the wheel. It is also sensible to take it off the road when the error appears with sudden shutdowns, abrupt power loss or signs of battery damage. A phase fault can affect the controller if current demand continues while riding.

The exact model matters: M365, Essential, 1S, Pro 2, Mi Electric Scooter 3 and newer ranges may show similar codes but require different repair procedures. A technician should identify the version, inspect the wiring, check all three phases and decide whether repairing the cable is enough or whether the motor or controller must be replaced. Number 12 does not automatically mean replacement, but it is a clear signal to treat the electrical system carefully.

An electronic warning worth taking seriously

Error 12 describes a specific fault, not a generic message: motor phase B is not being read or powered as the system expects. Checking connections, moisture and wiring first helps rule out the most accessible causes before considering expensive components. The right repair begins with diagnosis, not parts replacement.
