The E31 code on a Balay dishwasher is usually linked to the water heating system, especially the heat pump or temperature reading. The appliance may stop the program, leave dishes cold and wet, or display the warning shortly after the cycle begins.

If you have a problem with your dishwasher, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What the E31 code means on a Balay dishwasher

Balay belongs to the BSH group, together with Bosch and Siemens, so some appliances share architecture and codes. Even so, the exact meaning may vary according to the model and electronic version. In practice, E31 usually points to an issue with the heat pump, the NTC sensor or the connections linking these components to the control module.

The heat pump performs two tasks: it circulates water through the spray arms and raises its temperature. When it fails, the dishwasher may fill and drain normally but cannot wash with hot water. Drying also tends to worsen, glasses may come out greasy, or the program may stop before completion. This behavior distinguishes the fault from a typical drainage blockage.

Most common causes of the fault

The cause may be the heat pump motor, its integrated heating element or a worn capacitor that prevents the assembly from starting correctly. Limescale and dirt can also restrict water flow and cause internal overheating. On some models, wear appears after years of intensive use.

Another possibility is an incorrect temperature sensor reading. This small probe tells the electronics whether the water has reached the expected level; if it sends incorrect values, the appliance may stop as a safety measure. A loose wire, moisture in a connection or a failed electronic module can produce similar symptoms, which is why the code alone cannot identify one specific part.

Safe checks before requesting a repair

Before handling the appliance, switch it off, unplug it and close the water inlet tap. Wait between 10 and 15 minutes, then reconnect it to perform a complete electrical reset. Sometimes a temporary electronic disturbance disappears and the program works again, although the code returning means the problem was not temporary.

You can also clean the tub filters, remove visible debris from the sump and check that the spray arms rotate freely. Do not remove the base or test electrical components unless you are trained: the heat pump involves both water and mains voltage. If E31 returns, diagnosis requires checking continuity, the sensor, wiring and heating assembly with suitable instruments.

When it is best to call a technician

Replacing the heat pump usually requires removing the dishwasher and disconnecting pipes, clamps and electrical connections. This is different from cleaning a filter and may involve several parts, so do not force the appliance or repeatedly run cycles while the error is active.

Professional assistance is particularly advisable if there is a burning smell, tripped circuit breaker, leakage, cold water or a code that returns after resetting. It is also the prudent choice when the appliance is under warranty. The model manual can confirm the interpretation of E31 and give the technician the information needed to decide whether repairing the assembly or replacing the appliance is worthwhile.
