Error 40 on a Xiaomi scooter indicates that the controller has reached an unusually high temperature. On many models, the warning appears when this component approaches or exceeds 80 °C, a protection threshold designed to prevent electronic damage. The scooter may beep, display the code, lose power or stop accelerating.

If you have a problem with your electric scooter, you can use our free error code search tool. From there, you can identify and solve errors easily and effectively.

What code 40 means on a Xiaomi scooter

The controller is the board that coordinates the motor, battery, throttle and much of the electrical system. During a long climb, with a heavy load or at maximum demand, its power transistors work intensely and generate heat. Code 40 appears when the system determines that the temperature is no longer within a safe range.

It should not be confused with error 39, which is related to battery temperature. With code 40, the focus is on the controller temperature, usually measured in the lower deck area. The warning may occur on models such as the Xiaomi M365, Essential, 1S, Pro, Pro 2 and Mi Electric Scooter 3, although the way it is displayed depends on the firmware and installed dashboard.

Why it appears and what symptoms it causes

Overheating may have a temporary explanation: a long incline, riding with a heavy load, high outdoor temperatures or continuous use that makes the motor demand a great deal of current. Low tire pressure also matters because it increases resistance and puts more strain on the electrical system. In these circumstances, the warning may disappear after the scooter cools down.

When the error returns on short trips or even while the scooter is stationary, the cause needs closer attention. There may be a shifted or detached temperature sensor, a damaged connection, a faulty MOSFET or a controller that no longer measures temperature correctly. Moisture, pressure washing or firmware changes can also complicate the diagnosis.

Typical symptoms include power loss, intermittent acceleration, persistent beeping and preventive shutdown. Continuing to ride while the warning is active is not advisable: sustained heat can damage components, cause unexpected cutouts and turn a localized issue into a more expensive electronic failure.

How to respond to error 40 safely

Stop the scooter in a safe place, switch it off and let it rest in the shade for at least 30 minutes. Do not cool it with water, ice or extremely cold air, as sudden temperature changes can cause condensation and affect the connections. While it cools, check that the wheel is not dragging, that the tires have suitable pressure and that no dirt is blocking rotation.

Once cool, you can briefly switch it on without accelerating or starting a journey. If the code disappears after intense use, reduce the load, avoid prolonged climbs and take breaks. The fact that the warning disappears does not prove that the cause has been fixed; it only confirms that the temperature has temporarily fallen.

If it returns immediately, appears when cold or is accompanied by a hot-plastic smell, electrical noises or shutdowns, do not open the battery or handle the controller without the necessary knowledge. Diagnosis requires testing the sensor, inspecting solder joints, checking connectors and assessing the MOSFETs. Replacing parts at random can damage the system and make the fault harder to trace.

When to stop using the scooter

Occasional code 40 after a demanding climb is not as serious as a warning that repeatedly appears on flat ground. The difference lies in the context and frequency. A scooter that heats up quickly may be revealing poor cooling, abnormal electrical demand or a component operating outside its intended conditions.

Professional inspection is particularly important after the vehicle has become wet, a different battery has been installed or the firmware has been modified. In these situations, the controller should be checked before riding again. The protection system is designed to stop the scooter before greater damage occurs, not to allow normal use while the warning remains active.
