Error 18 on a Balay washing machine: clean the filter

The E18 code often has a simple cause: a blocked drain or a filter full of residue.

The E18 error on a Balay washing machine appears when the appliance cannot drain the water from the drum within the expected time. In most cases, the cause is a blocked drain filter, although the hose, pump or household drain may also be involved.

If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What the E18 error means on a Balay washing machine

The machine stops the program because the water remains inside and cannot flow normally into the drainpipe. That is why clothes may be left soaking wet, the spin cycle may never start or the door may remain locked for a few minutes.

The warning does not identify a broken part on its own. It signals that the draining circuit is not working as it should. Lint, coins, hair clips, buttons and small fabric scraps can collect in the filter until they form a barrier like a plug.

You may also hear a humming sound while the water level fails to drop. This means the pump is receiving power but is blocked or cannot move enough water. The filter is usually located at the lower front, behind a small cover, although the exact design varies by model.

Cleaning the filter is the first check

Before handling the machine, switch it off, unplug it and wait for the water to cool. Place a container under the cover and several towels around it, because opening the filter can release a significant amount of water, especially when a cycle stopped with a full drum.

Turn the cap slowly and let the water drain gradually. Remove visible debris, rinse the filter under the tap and check that the pump’s small impeller can move without catching. Do not force it or insert metal tools that could damage the blades.

Then reinstall the filter fully and close it firmly, without overtightening. An incorrectly fitted filter can cause leaks. Run a drain or spin program without laundry and check whether the water flows continuously. If the code disappears, the blockage was probably the cause.

When the hose or pump is responsible

The rear hose must be free from bends, crushing and twists. Check its connection to the trap or wall drain as well: a blockage in the household drain produces symptoms identical to those of a dirty filter. Remove the end carefully and keep a bucket ready for residual water.

The hose position matters. On many models, the drain point should be approximately 60 to 100 centimeters above the floor, according to the manual. An outlet that is too high or partly blocked can prevent the pump from working properly.

If the filter is clean, the hose is clear and the household drain works, the cause may be the drain pump, pressure switch or wiring. The pump may have a damaged motor, a broken impeller or an object trapped inside. These checks require parts of the appliance to be removed and should be carried out with the machine unplugged.

What to do if the warning returns

Do not run several cycles with water trapped inside. Besides straining the pump, stagnant moisture encourages bad odors and may leave clothes improperly rinsed. Once the issue is fixed, check pockets and use a mesh bag for small garments.

Cleaning the filter every two or three months is reasonable for normal household use, and it can be done sooner in homes with young children or pets. This simple task reduces residue buildup and helps preserve the performance of the drain system.

If E18 returns after these checks, or you notice leaks, a burning smell, metallic noises or no pump sound at all, stop using the washing machine. A technician can identify the affected part and prevent unnecessary replacements.
