According to the most widely accepted version, he noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted while he was near the equipment. This was not a minor anecdote: it was a clue that microwaves could transfer energy to food in an unprecedented way.

Spencer did not stop at the surprise. He tested other foods, including popcorn kernels and an egg, and confirmed that the phenomenon could be reproduced. The principle was simple and powerful: the waves agitated the water molecules in the food and generated heat from within, without relying on the slow heating of the surrounding air. Instead of heating an entire chamber, the appliance targeted what mattered, the food itself.

That insight transformed a laboratory observation into an industrial development line.
