The exact moment when the smell is noticed offers very valuable clues. It does not smell the same during spin cycle as it does when a wash starts, nor does a mild, brief smell mean the same as one that repeats in every cycle. A washing machine that smells like hot rubber while the drum speeds up usually points to transmission friction, while a smell of burning plastic or wiring is more likely to indicate an electrical problem.
If the appliance stops on its own and then starts working again after a few minutes, the motor may be activating its thermal protection. That behavior indicates that it is working above its capacity or that something is forcing it to make more effort than normal. By contrast, when the drum turns normally but the smell appears strongly during spinning, the belt, pulleys or bearings usually become suspects.
The sequence also matters. Smell without smoke, without strange noises and without loss of performance does not carry the same weight as a scenario with vibration, metallic rubbing or a sudden stop in the cycle. In many conventional washing machines, the belt transfers motion from the motor to the drum. When that part wears out, loosens, or its supports become misaligned, it starts to slip. The scene is usually quite recognizable: the motor tries to drive the drum, the drum responds less smoothly, and a dense, dry smell appears, almost like overheated rubber. If, in addition, the clothes come out too wet or the drum turns sluggishly, the drive system may need urgent attention. It is not a fault to ignore, because wear progresses quickly once friction sets in.
In some models, the problem is not only the belt, but also pulleys, tensioners, or elements of the spinning assembly itself. Bearings may also be involved; when they begin to fail, they produce noise, vibration, and abnormal strain on the motor. The final result, even if the affected parts are different, is often similar: heat where there should be none and a burnt smell where there used to be only silent mechanical work.
Overheated motor and excessive effort
The motor is the lungs of the washing machine. If it has to move too much weight, if it encounters resistance in the drum, or if it is dragging a previous mechanical fault, it heats up more than expected. That overheating can generate a strong smell, sometimes with an electrical note, sometimes with a harsher hint, like varnish or hot plastic. When the motor struggles, the appliance also loses rhythm: it spins worse, takes longer, and may interrupt the cycle.
Overloading is one of the easiest causes to understand and, at the same time, one of the most common. Putting in too much laundry, adding heavy duvets, or washing loads that absorb a lot of water forces the system to work under more strain. A fault does not always appear immediately; often the damage accumulates until the smell acts as a late warning.
Continuous use of very demanding programs without respecting the load type also has an effect. A household washing machine is not designed to endure, over and over again, the same mechanical punishment caused by an overfilled drum. When the motor starts to heat up repeatedly, the problem is no longer just the smell: the appliance’s service life is visibly shortened.
Electrical smell: wiring, connections, and hot components
There is a type of smell that completely changes the urgency of the case. If the washing machine gives off a smell of burned plastic, wiring or insulation, suspicion shifts toward the electrical system. It may involve loose terminals, worn connections, damaged wires, or some internal component that has begun to heat up more than it should. That scenario calls for more caution than others because the risk is no longer only mechanical.
A faulty connection acts like an improvised resistor. Energy finds a weak point, the temperature rises, and the smell appears before the fault becomes obvious to the naked eye. In some cases, sparks are also seen, the machine does not respond when switched on, or the home’s circuit protection trips. When the smell appears even with the washing machine plugged in but without starting a program, the alarm is greater, because the source may be in the power supply or the electronics.
It is worth not confusing this smell with the one caused by a worn belt. Hot rubber tends to be drier and closer to the lower rear part of the appliance; the electrical smell, by contrast, tends to feel harsher, more pungent, as if it were coming from an overheated cable. When a new washing machine smells strange in the first uses
Not every burnt smell means a fault. In a new washing machine, it is relatively common for the first cycles to give off an aroma similar to warm plastic, rubber, or industrial materials. During manufacturing and transport, residues of lubricants, oils, and synthetic components remain behind and heat up when the machine first starts working for real. That smell usually appears in the first one to five washes and gradually disappears.
The key is how it evolves. If the smell fades with each use, there is no visible smoke, and operation is normal, it is most likely a temporary process. After that, only if it is safe, a visual inspection from the outside can be done. This is not about taking anything apart or forcing parts, but about looking for obvious signs of heat, marks, rubbing, or a smell that is more concentrated in the lower or rear area. If the drum does not turn properly, if the panel shows errors, or if the appliance has tripped the power, the next step is no longer domestic, but technical.
Restarting out of curiosity is a bad impulse. When a washing machine smells burnt, insisting on testing it can worsen the fault and make the repair more expensive. The machine may work one more time, but at the cost of damaging a motor, a board, or a belt that was still halfway to breaking.

That accumulated effort leaves its mark in the form of heat, noise, and, in the long run, smell.
In homes with intensive use, preventive maintenance can be as useful as a repair. Adjusting worn parts before they break avoids more dramatic scenes, such as visible smoke or sudden stops. Home maintenance does not eliminate every fault, but it does separate minor issues from expensive, abrupt damage.
When technical intervention is no longer optional
There are situations in which the washing machine has clearly crossed a line. If the burnt smell is accompanied by smoke, if a strong electrical smell is detected, if the machine turns off by itself, or if the drum does not turn normally, technical intervention is no longer a recommendation and becomes a necessity. The appliance may be operating with a damaged component, and continuing to use it only increases the risk.
