My Xiaomi scooter will not fold: causes and solution

When the stem of a Xiaomi scooter will not lower, there is usually a specific cause: the latch is under tension, the lever does not release the hook, or dirt has built up around the hinge. Do not force the handlebar, because a sudden twist can deform the folding mechanism or leave the steering with excessive play.

Switch the vehicle off, unplug the charger and place it on a stable surface. The system used by the M365, Essential, 1S and several Pro versions is similar, although the lever adjustment and hook may vary slightly. The goal is to release the latch, not push the stem harder.

The folding mechanism will not release the stem

At the bottom of the handlebar tube there is a metal lever or clamp. Before moving it, align the handlebar with the deck and push the stem slightly forward. This pressure reduces the load on the latch and often allows the lever to open. A small release of tension may be enough to unlock it.

With the lever open, pull the stem up a few centimeters and lower it again gently. If the hook remains attached to the rear fender, check that no strap, cable, accessory or dirt is interfering. On models with an adjustable latch, an overly tight nut can prevent movement; loosening it by only a quarter turn with the proper tool may restore the travel. Do not dismantle the steering or remove the battery to solve a folding blockage.

What to check when the lever is stiff

Dust, sand and surface rust collect around the hinge and lever axle, especially after riding on wet streets. Clean the area with a dry cloth and use a small brush to remove particles. A very small amount of lubricant suitable for metal mechanisms may then be applied, keeping it away from the brake disc, tires and electrical connections. Excess oil attracts more dirt and can create a new problem.

If the lever moves but the stem does not fold, inspect the hook beside the rear fender. It should move in and out without abnormal rubbing. A crash or transport with the latch incorrectly positioned can misalign this part. Do not hit the hook or bend it with pliers: the adjustment requires precision, and even slight deformation can prevent the scooter from locking when unfolded. The latch should open and close firmly, without requiring excessive force.

How to check that the scooter is secure

Once the mechanism is released, lower the stem until the hook engages with the rear mounting point. The handlebar should be parallel to the deck and the lever must sit in its normal position. Lift the scooter by the stem and check that it does not separate. If the latch does not hold the assembly, do not carry or ride it.

To unfold it, release the hook, raise the stem and press the lever until it is fully closed. Then move the handlebar forward and backward without using force. Any noticeable play, metallic clicking, crack or sudden resistance warrants professional inspection. Folding is convenient, but it is also part of the vehicle’s structural safety: a faulty latch can cause the steering to collapse while riding.

On the Xiaomi M365, M365 Pro, Essential and 1S, blockages are often solved through cleaning, alignment and moderate adjustment. When those checks are not enough, the cause may be in the axle, lever or hook, and continuing to force it only increases wear. A mechanism that does not lock cleanly needs repair before riding again.
