Xiaomi scooter without brakes: causes and safe solutions

Common causes of weak braking and essential checks to prevent risks while riding.

A Xiaomi scooter that does not brake properly should remain out of use until the source of the fault is found. Loss of braking may come from a misaligned brake lever, worn pads, a warped disc or a faulty electronic sensor; each cause requires a different check, and not all problems can be solved through the Mi Home app.

The first step is to switch it off, place it on a stable surface and operate the lever several times without riding. If the lever reaches the handlebar, the disc rubs unevenly or the wheel remains locked, do not test it on the street. Strong regenerative braking may slow the scooter when the throttle is released, but it does not replace the mechanical brake or excuse an inadequate response.

What can cause poor braking

On models such as the M365, 1S and Pro 2, the rear brake usually works through a disc and a cable-operated caliper, although the setup varies across newer ranges. With use, the cable can lose tension and the pads become thinner. As a maintenance reference, a pad with around 1 millimeter of usable material needs replacement, especially if the metal backing is already touching the disc.

Dirt, water and grease can also reduce grip. A contaminated disc may look shiny and clean but provide weak bite, like a wet sole on tile. Check that it has no oil, spins straight and that the caliper is centered. A rear wheel that does not spin freely may indicate a bent disc, a worn bearing or a controller sending current to the motor without throttle input.

When the problem appears alongside beeps or an error icon, the cause may be the brake lever sensor. On many Xiaomi scooters, error 15 indicates an abnormal sensor reading; a pinched cable, damp connector or misaligned lever can prevent acceleration and make the scooter seem to brake by itself. Error 18, by contrast, points to the motor or its Hall sensors.

Safe checks before repairing

With the scooter switched off, inspect the cable from the lever to the lower stem area. Its outer sleeve should be intact, without cuts or tight bends. Operate the lever and check that it returns smoothly; a spongy, sideways or excessively loose lever needs adjustment or inspection. Do not tighten the cable blindly: excessive tension can keep the caliper partly closed.

Next, lift the drive wheel without placing your hands between the disc and caliper. Spin it and listen for constant scraping. Slight friction can be normal, but noticeable braking on every rotation indicates misalignment or deformation. The decisive test should be carried out unloaded and at very low speed, in a private area, never on a road with traffic or pedestrians.

The Mi Home app can show vehicle status and, depending on the model, adjust energy recovery. Lowering that setting may soften the resistance when the throttle is released, but it will not repair worn pads or a broken cable. It is also worth installing available official firmware; unauthorized modifications can change safety protections and make diagnosis harder.

When to call a technician

Replacing pads, centering a caliper or making a basic cable adjustment can be simple for someone with the right tools and experience. However, opening the battery, handling the BMS or replacing controller MOSFETs involves electrical and thermal risks. The battery operates at high voltage, and a short circuit can cause serious damage.

If the brake still fails after checking wear, cable and disc, a workshop should measure the lever sensor and inspect the controller. Connectors should also be checked after a fall, water exposure or previous repair. Do not bypass the sensor or disconnect safety protections to make the motor accelerate, as this can cause a complete loss of control.

The well-known M365 folding-mechanism notice affected specific units in 2018 and does not by itself explain weak braking, although checking the serial number remains sensible on older examples. Safety depends on a complete system: mechanical brake, electronic signal, properly inflated tires and a firm steering assembly. When one of these elements fails, stopping is not an inconvenience; it is the most responsible diagnosis.
