F40 error on a Ferroli boiler: causes, pressure and solutions

The F40 warning on a Ferroli boiler almost always indicates excessive pressure in the primary circuit. It is not a decorative fault or a minor alarm: the electronics shut the appliance down to prevent damage to the installation, the safety valve or the expansion vessel. In some cases, the problem is not actually in the water but in the reading taken by the boiler, which is why diagnosis requires looking at both the hydraulic and electronic sides.

The most common reference values place the pressure with the system cold between 1.0 and 1.5 bar, and when hot between 1.5 and 2 bar. If the pressure gauge moves outside that range, the boiler may lock out with F40. When the excess is real, normalising the pressure is usually enough; when the reading is misleading, the sensor, pressure gauge or electronic board may be involved.

What the boiler is really warning about when F40 appears

The F40 code does not describe one single, clearly defined fault. In practice, the boiler is saying that the system is operating outside its safe zone and that something has upset the balance between water, expansion and control. This reading usually results in a preventive shutdown, because continuing to heat with excessive pressure can strain seals, heat exchangers and safety components.

The scene is easy to imagine: a circuit that should breathe calmly begins to close in on itself, like a valve receiving more load than it can absorb. If too much water enters or there is nowhere for it to go when it expands, the pressure rises. The boiler detects this, displays F40 and protects itself before the overpressure turns into a more serious fault.

It is worth bearing in mind that the same warning can appear for very different reasons. Sometimes the cause is simply a filling valve that was left open; at other times, it is a safety valve that no longer discharges; and occasionally, the problem begins in the expansion vessel or with a faulty reading from the control system. Not every high reading means the same type of fault, which is why proper diagnosis avoids blind fixes.

The correct pressure and why the range matters so much

In a domestic Ferroli boiler, the cold pressure is usually around 1.0-1.5 bar. With the circuit hot, the normal range rises slightly, reaching approximately 1.5 to 2 bar. These are not arbitrary figures: they reflect the natural behaviour of water as it heats up and takes up more volume.

If the pressure falls below these values, the boiler warns of a lack of water or an insufficiently filled circuit. If it rises too far, F40 comes into play. This limit protects the user and the appliance itself, because sustained overpressure can force water out through the safety valve, strain the expansion vessel membrane and accelerate the wear of parts that are already working at their limit.

Pressure should not be corrected through guesswork. Filling the system again and again without finding the cause leaves the installation on a kind of hamster wheel: it rises, falls and rises again. The key is to understand why the pressure moved out of range and why it does not stabilise on its own when the circuit cools down.

The most common explanation behind F40 is simple: more water than necessary has entered the heating circuit. This can happen because the filling valve was accidentally left open, because the valve itself failed and allowed water through unchecked, or because someone tried to compensate for low pressure and went beyond the correct value. The boiler interprets this excess as a risk and stops operating.

When that is the cause, the correction begins by closing the filling valve and checking the pressure gauge once the system is cold. If the pressure remains high, water must be released in a controlled manner through the drain valve or, failing that, by bleeding a radiator. The sensible approach is to proceed carefully: the aim is not to empty the circuit, but to return it to its useful range.

If the filling valve is damaged, the problem will come back even if nobody touches it. This detail matters, because a boiler that displays F40 again after a short time is pointing to a persistent cause. In that case, the circuit is not simply overfilled; water is entering where it should not, and the faulty part needs to be replaced.

The safety valve and expansion vessel, two parts that shape the diagnosis

The safety valve acts as the final barrier. When the pressure exceeds its threshold, it should open and release water to protect the system. If it becomes blocked, scaled up or faulty, the excess has nowhere to go and pressure builds up inside the circuit. The result may be F40 or a dangerously high pressure-gauge reading.

The expansion vessel plays an equally decisive role, although it is less visible. Inside it is a membrane that separates water from air, and that membrane absorbs the expansion of the liquid as the heating system reaches temperature. If the membrane is split or the vessel has lost its effectiveness, the system stops cushioning these changes and the pressure rises much more quickly.

There is a very useful clue for distinguishing this problem: the pressure seems reasonable when cold, but rises too quickly when the system heats up. This behaviour usually points to a lack of expansion capacity. In that situation, the solution is no longer a simple filling adjustment, but an inspection of the valve, a check of the vessel and replacement of whichever part has lost its function.

When the problem is not in the water, but in the reading

On some Ferroli boilers, F40 appears even though the actual pressure is not out of control. The focus then shifts to the pressure sensor, the pressure gauge or the electronic board. An incorrect measurement can cause the appliance to lock out because of a condition that does not physically exist or has already been corrected.

This type of fault can be recognised because the information does not match what the installation is showing. The pressure gauge appears stable, there are no clear signs of overpressure and yet the display keeps insisting. At that point, continuing to bleed or drain water blindly may make the situation worse, because the appliance may not be reporting a real excess, but rather a faulty reading.

The electronic board deserves special attention. It interprets the data and decides whether the boiler continues working or protects itself. If it is damaged, incorrectly configured or has altered parameters, it can trigger an unjustified lockout. This is why F40 is not always solved hydraulically; sometimes it requires a more precise electrical and electronic diagnosis.

Water hardness and the faults that keep coming back

Ferroli highlights a detail that often goes unnoticed: if the mains water exceeds 25° f in hardness, treated water should be used. The reason is clear. Hard water leaves deposits and causes corrosion which, although they may seem minor, affect the operation of sensitive components such as the drain valve, safety valve and expansion vessel.

Scale acts like a silent crust. It reduces the movement of mechanical parts, hinders heat exchange and forces the boiler to work harder. In large installations or systems that are refilled frequently, the risk is even greater, because every refill adds minerals and residue that eventually stick where they are least welcome.

When an installation is completely or partially drained, the subsequent refill should be done with treated water if that is the recommended condition for the system. It is not a minor detail. This precaution helps prevent the same warning from appearing again and again because of a fault that was not electronic at its source, but chemical and mechanical at the same time.

What the user can check and where the technical side begins

There are reasonable checks that form part of basic maintenance. Looking at the pressure gauge, closing the filling valve, checking whether the safety valve is discharging and bleeding a radiator to reduce slight overpressure are all tasks that fall within normal domestic use. It also helps to check whether the problem appeared immediately after the system was refilled, since that coincidence strongly points to the source of the excess.

Beyond that, the situation changes. Opening the electronics, handling the board or replacing sensors without a reliable diagnosis belongs to the technical realm. A boiler combines gas, electricity and water, a delicate combination that does not respond well to improvisation. A quick but poorly planned intervention can turn a safety shutdown into a much broader fault.

When F40 returns after the pressure has been corrected, the message is clear: a part is not doing its job or a reading is lying. At that point, attention should turn to the safety valve, expansion vessel, pressure sensor or board. The repetition of the warning is often the most valuable clue for distinguishing an isolated incident from a structural problem.

How the fault behaves once the pressure has got out of hand

The appliance’s behaviour usually follows a recognisable pattern. First, the boiler begins to operate with a sense of instability; then the warning appears on the display; and shortly afterwards, the heating or hot water stops responding as it should. This shutdown is not the appliance being difficult, but a protection designed to prevent greater damage.

In practical terms, the display becomes a red traffic light. It is not warning of a minor inconvenience, but of a condition that could compromise the installation if ignored. That is why F40 deserves immediate attention, even though in many cases it does not require a complex repair or an expensive replacement.

The difference between an isolated episode and a serious fault can be seen in how things develop. If the code disappears once the pressure is normalised and does not return, it was probably a one-off correction. If it reappears, the installation is still generating the same internal strain and the whole circuit and its control components should be checked more methodically.

The value of an accurate reading in a boiler working at its limit

Ferroli’s F40 is not a code with a single meaning, and that is where its complexity lies. It may indicate real overpressure, a faulty filling valve, a safety valve that is not releasing water, a tired expansion vessel or an incorrect measurement. This range of possibilities makes it necessary to diagnose the problem calmly and not confuse the cause with the symptom.

The good news is that the warning leaves clear clues. The pressure shown on the gauge, the behaviour after the boiler cools down, any possible discharge through the safety valve and the appliance’s response after closing the filling valve provide enough information to frame the problem. When these clues are read correctly, the code stops seeming opaque and becomes a useful warning.

In a heating system, few alarms speak so clearly about the balance between water, expansion and control. F40 does not punish the user; it marks the exact point at which the calm of the circuit was disturbed. And that is, in the end, the most valuable part of the warning: telling the installation to stop before the pressure causes more damage than it already has.
