Fault code 02 on many Immergas boilers indicates a lockout triggered by the overtemperature safety system: the appliance stops operating to protect itself against excessive heat. It does not automatically mean the thermostat or electronic control board needs replacing. Check the meaning in the manual for the specific model. If the boiler is unusually hot, makes abnormal noises or locks out again after a manufacturer-approved reset, leave it off and arrange an inspection by an appropriately qualified heating engineer.

If you have a problem with your boiler, you can use our free error code finder. It will help you identify and resolve errors easily and effectively.

A safety lockout does not identify the faulty part

The thermal protection acts as a barrier, stopping the burner when the system detects a condition it considers unsafe. The warning therefore identifies an operating condition first, rather than a particular replacement part. There may be genuine overheating or a problem with the components that monitor temperature. The appliance needs checking to distinguish between those situations.

Immergas manufactures different boiler ranges, and their controls and warning systems are not identical. Interpret the number alongside the full model designation and any accompanying message. Some manuals group several safety conditions under the same indication, so a general description cannot replace the documentation for the particular appliance.

You can identify the model from the manual, installation paperwork or an externally accessible label. There is no need to remove the casing. Photographing the display preserves the exact warning, including any prefixes or symbols, and prevents a reset from erasing useful information before you report the problem.

Timing matters too. A lockout immediately after startup provides different clues from one that occurs after several minutes of heating. That distinction does not allow an external diagnosis, but it helps establish when the fault occurs and which professional checks are appropriate, without replacing components through trial and error.

Heat can build up even when the burner is working

A boiler must both generate heat and transfer it to the water in the system. If that transfer is restricted, the temperature can rise excessively inside part of the appliance while the radiators remain cold. This distinction between heat production and circulation explains how a home can have no heating while its boiler is locked out because of temperature.

Possibilities for an engineer to assess include inadequate circulation, pump problems, air in the circuit or blockages. Deposits in the waterways may also be involved. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis: code 02 alone does not prove that the pump is seized or that the heat exchanger needs replacing.

The protection system and its monitoring components may also need checking. A detection fault or a problem with their connections can affect the information reaching the control system. However, blaming the electronics immediately skips an essential step: establishing whether the temperature is actually rising because of a hydraulic problem.

Checks involving the pump, sensors, internal connections and heat exchangers belong to an appropriately qualified heating engineer. Opening the boiler to turn the pump shaft, remove plugs or inspect wiring is not safe. Even when the appliance is switched off, it may retain hot water and pressure, alongside electrical components that require specialist handling.

Pressure adds context, but it does not turn code 02 into code 10

You can read the pressure gauge externally without operating any valves. Recording the reading and whether the appliance was cold or had just been running provides useful information. An apparently correct pressure does not guarantee good circulation: pressure and flow describe different aspects of the circuit and should not be confused when interpreting a lockout.

On the 23 kW Immergas Eolo Star, code 10 is associated with insufficient heating circuit pressure. The filling guidance for that model gives an approximate reference of 1.2 bar. That figure should not become a universal target for every Immergas boiler or an automatic remedy for a code 02 warning.

If the gauge shows a low reading, record it and compare it with the appliance manual. Do not top up the circuit simply because guidance for another code recommends doing so. The homeowner check here ends with reading the gauge; filling, draining or working on pressurised components falls outside these instructions.

Repeated pressure loss should not simply be attributed to normal evaporation either. A heating circuit is closed, and a recurring drop warrants investigation. Visible dampness, drips or marked changes between cold and hot readings are details to report, not reasons to keep adding water without diagnosing the underlying cause.

Similar numbers can point to different problems

Fault searches can easily mix manufacturers, models and similar-looking codes. A Ferroli A02 must not be interpreted as an Immergas 02: a matching number does not establish technical equivalence. Nor should prices or replacement parts advertised for a fault on another brand be applied to this lockout.

Within Immergas, it is also important to distinguish between ranges and confirm the code format. The table separates warnings that are often mixed together in searches, while retaining one essential limitation: the installed appliance’s manual takes priority, especially where available descriptions contradict one another.

CodeDescriptionAssociated cause or conditionScope and safe action
02Overtemperature safety lockout on many Immergas ranges.Possible overheating, inadequate circulation or a thermal monitoring issue.Confirm the meaning in the manual. Do not keep resetting if it returns.
10Insufficient pressure on the 23 kW Immergas Eolo Star. The circuit does not meet the required pressure condition.Read the pressure gauge. Do not automatically apply its remedy to code 02.
E01Ignition failure on Immergas models using this indication.A flame is not confirmed during the ignition sequence.Do not work on electrodes, the gas valve or electrical connections.
11Flue evacuation monitoring fault on certain ranges.Possible issue involving the pressure switch, fan, air intake or flue system, depending on the model. Some descriptions confuse it with a flame fault. Check the manual and do not dismantle flue pipes.

The distinction has practical consequences. Work intended to correct low pressure may have nothing to do with an ignition or flue problem. Applying a remedy because a number looks similar can create an additional issue. A model-specific diagnosis prevents unnecessary work on a circuit that was not involved.

It is also important to distinguish a fault warning from an information or parameter display. Not every letter-and-number combination means a component has failed. If the indication appears while navigating a menu, retain that context and avoid changing service settings to try to remove it: they may have no connection to the lockout.

External observations are more useful than opening the casing

A useful observation starts with the general condition of the appliance and its surroundings. Look only for visible signs, keeping your hands away from hot surfaces: water beneath the boiler, damp external connections or recent drip marks. A visible leak is a reason to stop testing and request an inspection, especially if it affects the appliance itself.

Sounds also provide context. Gurgling, banging or abnormal heating alongside a lockout should be described to the engineer, without repeatedly trying to reproduce them. There is no need to create another demand for heat to confirm something you have already observed. Deliberate repetition adds running time without necessarily improving the diagnosis.

Elsewhere in the home, you can note whether all radiators remain cold, whether some warm up or whether the problem coincides with a recent change in heating use. Do not operate unfamiliar valves or bleed radiators as an automatic response. That changes the circuit and does not, by itself, establish the cause of overheating.

If you smell gas, see smoke or soot, or hear a carbon monoxide alarm, this is no longer a routine display check. Do not reset the boiler or operate electrical switches. Leave the area and contact the emergency services or your gas network emergency service from a safe location. The displayed code becomes secondary.

A reset only makes sense under the right conditions

A reset may release a lockout, but it does not remove a blockage, repair a pump or correct a faulty reading. A cleared warning only means the control system has allowed operation at that moment. It does not prove the cause has disappeared, particularly if the same incident has happened before.

Before considering a reset, the appliance must no longer show abnormal heating, and there must be no leaks, smells, smoke or other warning signs. Follow the procedure in the model-specific manual. There is no button combination or press-and-hold duration that applies to every Immergas boiler.

If the manufacturer permits a user reset and there are no abnormal signs, one attempt can be made in accordance with those instructions. If code 02 returns, do not make repeated attempts or force repeated off-and-on cycles. A recurring lockout marks the limit of homeowner checks and requires a professional diagnosis.

There is no universal waiting period that guarantees safety either. Cooling depends on what happened and on the appliance design. If the user procedure does not release the lockout, do not look for a hidden reset beneath the casing or attempt to bypass a protective device. Any internal reset, where fitted, is an engineer’s responsibility.

Working hot water does not mean continued use is safe

On a combination boiler, behaviour may differ between central heating and domestic hot water production. A lockout that occurs only when heating the radiators provides a clue about the conditions that trigger it. It does not establish that hot water operation is necessarily safe or that the two modes are entirely independent.

The reverse is also true: a warning that appears when a tap is opened does not automatically identify a failed domestic hot water sensor. Water routes and the components involved depend on the model. Reporting which service triggers the fault helps, but an overall system check is still needed before deciding which component is responsible.

If code 02 recurs, switching to another mode to retain service is not a repair. Both uses may share components and protective devices. Keep the appliance off until you receive professional advice, rather than using whichever mode appears to run for longer. Avoiding the warning is not the same as resolving the fault.

Normal operation after an isolated incident is not a definitive guarantee either. Keep the photograph and the circumstances of the event. If it happens again, even days later or under a different demand, report both incidents. That operating history may reveal more than an inspection carried out while the appliance appears to be working normally.

The inspection should explain why the protection operated

The engineer’s task is not simply to clear the number from the screen. It is to establish whether genuine overheating occurred, check circulation conditions and verify the safety components against the model documentation. A repair is incomplete if a protective device is replaced without investigating what triggered it and checking operation afterwards.

The pump may be involved, but its condition needs to be assessed through the appropriate checks. The same applies to sensors, heat exchangers and electronic controls. A reasoned diagnosis distinguishes a failed part from one that is doing its job by stopping the appliance. That distinction prevents unnecessary replacements and faults that return after a component is changed.

Before authorising work, it is useful for the quotation to identify the diagnosed cause and what the total includes. Call-out, diagnosis, labour and replacement parts may be charged in different ways. Do not assume the call-out charge is deducted from the repair bill: that depends on the terms of the contractor you engage.

If the appliance has a warranty or maintenance agreement, check the terms before commissioning work outside that cover. You do not need to open the boiler to obtain useful information, and doing so can complicate the assessment of a claim. The cover documentation helps establish who should inspect the appliance without incurring avoidable costs.

A sound repair decision starts with avoiding speculative purchases

There is no single price for resolving a code 02 lockout. The cost depends on the confirmed cause, model, access and work required. An adjustment or circulation issue is not the same job as replacing a major assembly. Prices for an A02 fault on another brand cannot be transferred to this situation.

Do not buy a thermostat or control board based on the warning’s name either. Compatibility requires the exact appliance identification and a diagnosis of the part. Even a replacement that looks identical may not suit that version. Paying for a component before confirming the fault creates a potentially unrecoverable expense without necessarily bringing a solution closer.

When weighing repair against replacement, compare the complete quotation with the appliance’s general condition, previous faults and spare-part availability. Age provides context but should not decide the matter alone. A single lockout does not prove the boiler has reached the end of its useful life, while a major repair does not automatically guarantee future reliability.

The strongest decision comes once the model is known, the warning has been documented and a professional has explained its cause. Until then, observing externally and respecting the lockout achieves more than repeated testing. The goal is not to make code 02 disappear for a few minutes, but to restore safe, stable operation without concealing the condition that triggered the protection.
