Balay dishwasher: what the tap light means and what to do

Your Balay dishwasher tap light may indicate an inlet, drain or internal leak problem.

The tap-shaped indicator on a Balay dishwasher usually warns of a water-related problem, but it does not always mean that the inlet is closed. A bent hose, blocked filter, obstructed drain or activated leak-protection system can produce the same symptom. A flashing light means the appliance has stopped the cycle to protect itself, so it is worth checking the water supply before removing any parts.

If you have a problem with your dishwasher, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What the tap indicator means on a Balay

The signal may stay on or flash depending on the model and the type of fault. The simplest checks are to make sure the inlet tap is fully open and that the hose has not been crushed behind the cabinet. You should also inspect the small filter at the hose connection, since limescale and grit can reduce the flow until the dishwasher cannot fill its tub.

The appliance needs enough flow for its sensor to detect incoming water. As a reference, some Balay models require around 10 liters per minute. Low pressure, a partly closed valve or a faulty inlet valve can turn on the indicator even when the tap appears to work normally.

When the light flashes and the pump does not stop

A repeated drain-pump sound, together with a flashing indicator and the inability to start another program, often points to leak protection. In this situation, the sensor has detected water in the lower base of the appliance, beneath the tub. This may be caused by a leak, but also by excess suds from hand-washing detergent or spilled rinse aid.

In this situation, close the tap and disconnect the dishwasher from the power supply. Do not keep forcing the cycle or touch wires, sensors or the electronic board. Tilting the appliance to drain water from the base may switch off the light temporarily, but it does not remove the source of the leak. If the warning returns, the loss must be located by a technician.

Related codes and useful checks

On models with a display, the indicator may appear alongside a code. E15 is usually associated with leak protection; E18 with insufficient or interrupted water intake; and E24 and E25 with drainage difficulties or a blocked pump. E22 normally indicates dirty or obstructed filters, while E09 points to a heating-system problem.

With the appliance disconnected, remove and wash the tub filters with hot water, check that the drain hose is not bent and confirm that the siphon connection is open. If you reach the pump area, wear gloves: a piece of glass or a bone can block the impeller. The cover must be properly secured, because an incorrectly fitted part can also trigger a drain warning.

A reset can clear a lock, not a fault

When there is no standing water or visible blockage, resetting the program can rule out a temporary lock. On many Balay models, holding the start button for about three seconds cancels the cycle and starts drainage. The appliance can then be switched off and on again according to the instructions for that model.

If the indicator returns, the pump runs continuously, water enters without stopping or moisture appears beneath the appliance, the problem needs professional diagnosis. Water and electricity require caution: do not remove the base or bypass the safety system. The manual gives the exact meaning of the indicator and the model-specific procedure for each Balay series.

A small signal that prevents bigger damage

The tap symbol provides an early barrier against filling, draining and leak problems. Cleaning the filters regularly, never using hand soap and keeping the hoses clear can reduce warnings, although they cannot prevent wear to valves, pumps or sensors. The key is distinguishing an accessible blockage from active leak protection: the first allows basic home checks; the second should not be ignored.
