What the F23 system actually detects

In Balay models that use this protection, a float or sensor located in the lower tray reacts when water accumulates. As the float rises, the system interprets this as a leak and may block the water supply. This is why the message often appears with an interrupted cycle, water beneath the machine or an unusual sound from the pump.

The presence of water does not always mean there is a major break. A slightly loose connection, a worn clamp or detergent residue can cause a slow leak that only becomes visible during filling, washing or spinning. Moisture may also build up through condensation, although this possibility should be confirmed before using the appliance again.

The most common causes of the F23 error

The inlet hose is one of the first points worth checking, especially where it connects to the tap and washing machine. The drain hose, filter and pump can also leak if they are damaged, incorrectly closed or affected by a blockage. A worn door seal usually leaves marks on the front, while a damaged tub seal may cause moisture beneath the drum.

During the spin cycle, vibrations can shift a connection that seemed secure. An unlevel washing machine or an overloaded drum can worsen an existing leak, although imbalance alone is not usually the direct cause of F23. What to do before starting it again

Disconnect the washing machine from the power supply and close the water tap. If there is liquid on the floor, remove it carefully and do not touch wet areas while the appliance is connected. The priority is to eliminate electrical risk and prevent more water from entering the machine.

With the appliance isolated, visually inspect the hoses and connections without removing panels or handling wires. You may check whether the filter is incorrectly closed, but any opening should follow the manual and take place after draining residual water. Do not tilt the washing machine sharply or dismantle it without experience: it is heavy and retained water may spill suddenly.

Drying the lower tray may make the warning disappear temporarily, but it does not prove the fault has been repaired. That distinction matters because cleaning the filter will not fix an internal leak. F23 is primarily a protection signal: the washing machine is warning that it needs a physical inspection before continuing to operate.

Checking hoses every six months, cleaning the filter according to the manual and keeping the machine level can reduce the risk of incidents. Even so, seals age and vibrations leave their mark over time. A dry tray does not replace a repair when the sensor activates again; at that point, household safety should matter more than completing a wash cycle.
