H error on a Balay induction hob: what it means

The letter H shown on a Balay induction hob is usually not a fault code. On most models, it indicates that a cooking zone still has residual heat after cooking, even though the glass is not glowing red. An uppercase H indicates a higher temperature, while a lowercase h indicates more moderate residual heat.

What the H means on a Balay hob

Induction heats the cookware directly through an electromagnetic field. The glass does not create heat like a conventional heating element, but it receives some heat from the pan or pot. For that reason, after a zone is switched off, the system keeps the H residual heat indicator visible to prevent someone from touching the glass and getting burned.

The indicator may take a few moments to appear and can remain visible for several minutes, depending on the power level, cookware size and cooking time. It does not mean the hob is still using electricity or that an electronic fault exists. The letter will disappear once the surface reaches a safe temperature; even so, do not touch it while the warning is displayed.

H does not disappear: simple checks

When the zone seems cool, wipe the control panel with a dry cloth and wait a little longer. The sensor may retain its temperature reading for longer after intense cooking, particularly when boiling, frying or using cookware with a thick base. A nearby zone may also show the warning even if it was not used directly.

If the H remains for a long time while the hob is completely cold, switch the appliance off at the electrical panel for about 30 seconds and reconnect it. Do not remove the glass or try to access the electronics: the hob operates at dangerous voltages, and home repairs can worsen the fault or void the warranty. When the warning may indicate a problem

The situation is different if beeps, zones that do not heat, flashing indicators or codes such as F, E, U or combinations of letters and numbers appear alongside the H. A wet panel, an object on the controls, cookware unsuitable for induction or overheating can trigger protection messages. Remove the cookware, dry the controls and let the appliance cool down.

Warnings involving the electrical connection, voltage or electronics should not be solved by opening the hob. A circuit breaker that trips repeatedly, a persistent burnt-plastic smell or a zone that suddenly switches off are signs to stop using the appliance and arrange a professional inspection. The exact code and Balay model are essential for interpreting the diagnosis correctly.

The hob may also switch on without heating because Demo mode is active, or fail to respond because the child lock is enabled. Holding the key symbol for about four seconds usually disables the lock, although the procedure depends on the model. The H by itself remains a temperature warning, not proof of a breakdown.
