E22 error on a Balay hob: causes and safe solutions
Find out what E22 may indicate on a Balay hob and which safe checks to perform before calling a technician.

The E22 code on a Balay ceramic hob means that the appliance has detected an irregularity, but it does not have one universal meaning across all models. It may involve the touch panel, temperature, electronic communication or a temporary issue caused by moisture and dirt. For that reason, the manual for the specific model is the definitive reference.
Before removing anything, carry out a few simple and safe checks. Remove any cookware, dry the glass and controls completely, switch off the appliance at the electrical panel for several minutes and reconnect it. If the warning disappears and does not return during normal use, it was probably a temporary lockup; if it returns, the cause needs closer investigation.

What can cause the E22 code on a Balay hob
A frequent cause of electronic warnings is water, grease or food residue on the touch control. A drop can keep a sensor pressed, prevent the hob from interpreting commands correctly or activate a safety function. Clean the glass with a soft cloth, without spraying cleaner directly onto the controls, and wait until the surface is completely dry.
There may also be a ventilation problem. Induction hobs contain components that need to release heat underneath; an overly enclosed cabinet, items stored below the appliance or repeated use at maximum power can raise the internal temperature. In that case, let the hob cool and check that the air inlets and outlets are not blocked.
E22 can also appear after an electrical disturbance, such as a brief outage, a surge or a tripped circuit breaker. Resetting the appliance does not repair a damaged part, but it can distinguish a temporary fault from a persistent one. Do not keep switching it on if the code returns immediately or appears with clicking sounds, a burning smell or uneven heating.
How to reset the ceramic hob safely
Turn the hob off using its normal control and remove all cookware. Then switch off the relevant circuit at the electrical panel for at least five minutes. Turn it back on and test one zone with suitable cookware at low power. This operation restarts the electronics, but it does not necessarily erase a stored fault.
Do not use knives, pins or liquids to free the controls, and do not remove the glass to reach the interior. The hob works with high voltages even when it appears to be off. If the error is accompanied by an unresponsive panel, zones switching off by themselves or a circuit breaker tripping, the appliance must be inspected by a qualified technician.
When to stop using it and request an inspection
If E22 persists after cleaning, drying and resetting, the issue is unlikely to be solved through household maintenance. The cause may involve the control module, a sensor, wiring or communication between components. The code alone cannot identify which part needs replacing or justify buying a new hob.
Stop using the appliance if you notice an electrical smell, smoke, dark marks on the glass, unusual noises or heating without selecting a zone. Note the code, model and when it appears; a photograph of the display can also help with diagnosis. The combination of E22 and its related symptoms gives a professional far more useful information than the warning by itself.
Regular cleaning, flat cookware, clear ventilation and careful use of the panel reduce many incidents, although they cannot prevent electronic wear. The key is not to confuse an effective reset with a repair: when the warning returns, safety and an accurate diagnosis should matter more than continuing with improvised solutions.
