Code 39 on a Balay hob usually indicates an issue with the electronic system, although its exact meaning may vary depending on the model and generation of the appliance. The display may show it continuously or after a beep, and in both cases the cooking zones may become locked as a safety measure.

If you have a problem with your ceramic hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What code 39 means on a Balay hob

On Balay hobs, codes linked to the electronics may appear after a power fluctuation, overheating or a communication failure between the touch display and the power module. Error 39 should not be understood as exactly the same fault on every appliance: the model manual determines the correct interpretation.

The hob may continue showing the code even after the initial incident has disappeared. It may also be that the panel does not respond, one or more zones do not heat or the appliance switches off shortly after starting. These symptoms point to an active safety protection or an issue requiring diagnosis, not necessarily damaged glass.

The reset that may clear a temporary fault

Before handling the installation, switch off the hob using its normal control and remove any cookware. Then cut the power at the relevant circuit breaker or unplug the appliance if this can be done safely. Leave the hob without power for at least one minute and reconnect it once the surface is cool and dry.

This procedure temporarily discharges the electronics and may correct a lock caused by a power fluctuation. If the code disappears and the controls work again, monitor the hob during the next uses without covering its ventilation areas. A reset does not repair a defective component: it only helps distinguish a temporary error from a persistent fault.

Moisture on the touch control can also cause unusual responses. Clean the glass with a soft cloth, remove salt, sugar or grease and wait until it is completely dry. Do not pour water directly over the controls or place utensils there, because a damp panel may lock or interpret incorrect touches.

When to stop using it and request assistance

If code 39 returns after the reset, the hob produces continuous beeps, smells of burnt components or trips the electrical panel, stop using it. The electronic module can contain dangerous voltages even when the surface appears off, so removing the cover or checking internal wiring is not a household repair.

The technician will need the exact model and product number, usually found in the documentation or on the label underneath the hob. With these details, the professional can consult the model-specific code table, check the power supply, inspect the control module and test the power components. Replacing parts without a diagnosis can increase the repair cost and does not guarantee that the code will disappear.

Prevention involves a suitable electrical installation, clear ventilation and careful cleaning. Balay hobs measuring 60 centimetres can reach total outputs close to 5,700 watts, so an incorrect connection or overloaded circuit may affect their operation. When an error recurs, the safest approach is to treat it as a protective signal rather than an ordinary warning that can be ignored.

An electronic signal that deserves attention

Code 39 does not identify a failed part by itself, but it does show that the hob has detected a condition outside its normal parameters. A controlled reset may solve an isolated incident; a repeated warning requires inspection using the procedure specified for that model. Safety must take priority over any attempt to keep cooking with unstable controls.
