Inverted 9 error on a Balay hob: causes and solution
An inverted 9 may indicate an electronic fault. Learn how to reset the hob and when professional repair is advisable.

The symbol resembling an inverted 9 that appears on a Balay induction hob usually corresponds to an E9 code or to a distorted reading on the display. On many models, it is linked to the power module, electronic communication or a supply problem, not necessarily to the pan being used. The exact interpretation depends on the appliance model and version.
If you have a problem with your induction hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the inverted 9 means on a Balay hob
Induction cooking depends on several coordinated elements: sensors, coils, control boards and modules that turn electrical current into the magnetic field that heats the cookware. When one of these parts stops communicating correctly, the display may show a combination that the user sees as an inverted 9 or an E9. That is why there is no single explanation that applies to every Balay hob.
The fault may affect one particular area, especially when two cooking zones stop working while the others continue operating. This behavior points toward the electronic module connected to those zones. It may also appear after a power surge, an outage or excessive heat, although the code alone cannot confirm which component has failed.
Safe reset before considering a repair
The first attempt should be simple and does not require removing the hob. Turn it off using its sensor, remove all cookware and cut the power at the appropriate circuit breaker. Leave the appliance without power for at least 30 seconds; if the error appeared after an outage or electrical irregularity, waiting several minutes may help discharge the circuits.
Restore the power and test one zone with induction-compatible cookware that is dry and centered. The base should be flat and magnetic, but incompatible cookware normally causes the indicator to flash or prevents detection, rather than producing this code. If the message returns immediately, repeatedly switching the hob on and off is not advisable.
When the problem points to the electronic module
If resetting does not change the situation, the source may be the power supply, capacitors, control circuits or IGBT power transistors. In some cases, technicians also find damaged solder joints, failed protection components or a loss of capacity in the resonant capacitor. These are laboratory checks requiring tools and experience, not a household inspection.
Opening an induction hob creates a risk of electric shock even after it has been unplugged, because some components may retain voltage. Checking continuity or replacing parts without electrical training is unsafe. A technician should identify the full model from its rating label, test the affected module and decide whether repairing specific components or replacing the power board is more appropriate.
Distinguishing a real fault from other warnings
A display that flashes when a pan is placed on the hob usually indicates that no cookware has been detected, that the diameter is insufficient or that the utensil is incompatible. The letter F can have a similar function on certain models. The child lock, demo mode and residual heat can also create symbols that resemble faults, but they should not be diagnosed by the shape of the character alone.
The manual for the exact model remains the decisive reference, because Balay may use different codes across apparently similar hob families. If the error remains, always affects the same zones, trips the circuit breaker or is accompanied by a hot plastic smell, stop using the appliance and arrange a professional inspection. A code on the glass is only the visible tip of a problem that may be hidden underneath.
A signal that deserves a precise interpretation
An inverted 9 does not automatically mean that the hob is beyond repair or that the cookware is to blame. A controlled reset may clear a temporary lockout, but a recurring warning usually requires an electrical diagnosis. The combination of the code, the affected zones and the behavior after resetting provides more information than the symbol alone.
Prevention means keeping ventilation openings clear, avoiding spills on the control panel and protecting the installation from voltage fluctuations. A clean surface supports daily operation but cannot correct an internal fault. On a Balay hob, distinguishing between a detection warning and a module failure avoids pointless tests and, above all, prevents unsafe intervention.
