What the 5h display means on a Balay washing machine

The 5h combination usually shows a time setting linked to the delayed start or finish function. The letter h stands for hours and the number shows the selected period. It should not be confused with codes such as E18, E29 or F43, which identify problems related to drainage, water intake or the motor.

The machine’s behavior also helps distinguish a setting from a fault. If the panel is lit, the door remains normally locked and the time changes when you press the relevant button, there is probably only a delay activated. The cycle will start or finish according to the selected setting, not necessarily immediately.

How to cancel the five-hour delay

The exact procedure depends on the series and control panel, but normally you only need to press the Finish delay, Finished in or End time button repeatedly until 5h disappears and the regular programme time appears. On other models, you may need to hold the button for a few seconds or turn the selector back to the off position.

Then choose the wash programme, check the temperature and spin speed, and press Start. If the controls do not respond, turn the selector to off, wait about one minute and reconnect the machine. Disconnecting it from the power supply for five or 10 minutes may clear a temporary setting, although it will not repair a persistent physical fault.

Do not force the door or pull out the plug while the drum contains water. If you need to open it, first select a drain or spin function and wait for the water to leave. The door lock depends on the water level and temperature, not only on the selected programme.

When 5h disappears but the machine still does not work

If the display clears but the cycle still does not start, check that the door closes completely and that no garment is trapped in the seal. It is also worth checking that the water tap is fully open, the inlet hose is not bent and the socket is supplying power. A child lock may prevent the buttons from responding even though there is no fault.

If an E or F code appears after the delay is removed, the cause is different. A water-intake problem may involve blocked filters or low pressure; when the machine cannot drain, the drain filter and hose are the first points to inspect. Before opening the filter, place a bowl and several towels underneath because there may be residual water inside the system.

Stop troubleshooting if you notice a burning smell, smoke, sparks, a substantial leak or a drum that does not turn freely. In those situations, disconnect the appliance without taking it apart and note the exact code, model and E-Nr. This information makes the technical diagnosis more accurate and avoids replacing parts based on guesswork.

A time display should not be mistaken for a fault

In most cases, the 5h display works like a programmed clock rather than a fault signal.
