The Er-03 warning on an Electrolux dishwasher almost always indicates a problem in the system that moves water around inside the tub. In practice, this means one of two things: the wash pump is not turning as it should, or an object, solid residue, or dirt is slowing down the circulation. The appliance protects itself, stops the cycle, and indicates that it cannot maintain the pressure needed to clean properly.
This error usually appears with the program stopped halfway through the cycle, little water spraying from the spray arms, or a brief humming sound followed by silence. It is not a decorative panel fault, but rather reflects a real problem with water circulation, so it is best approached methodically. The difference between a localized blockage and a damaged component completely changes the repair.
What the Er-03 warning really means
In Electrolux dishwashers, the Er-03 code is linked to the wash motor or pump, also known as the circulation pump. Its function is to push the water with enough force for it to reach the spray arms and hit the dishes at the correct pressure. When this flow is not generated, the electronics detect that the wash system is not operating within the expected parameters.
The visible result is usually partially washed dishes, dishes that are dirty or barely wet, the appliance stopping before completing the program, or attempting to start and immediately going into protection mode. This error does not usually indicate problems with water intake or drainage; the focus is on internal circulation, a central part of the cycle.
It is best to interpret this code as a functional blockage warning: the dishwasher has been told to wash, but it cannot move the water with the necessary power. Sometimes it detects a mechanical obstruction; at other times, a loss of electrical continuity; and in less frequent cases, a fault in the module that controls the motor. Although the message is the same, the cause can vary.
The most common causes behind the fault
- Obstruction in the wash pump: The most common cause. A piece of glass, small bone, label, hardened grease residue, or seed can block the impeller. Although it may seem like a minor detail, a single particle is enough to affect the rotation and trigger the error.
- Electrical problems in the motor: The winding may deteriorate over time, the contacts may lose their effectiveness, or the motor may respond intermittently. In these cases, the motor may turn erratically, make humming sounds, or start with less power. The electronics detect this irregularity and stop the sequence.
- Damaged wiring or loose connections: Moisture, vibration, and the passage of time can loosen connectors or damage the insulation in the lower part of the appliance. A corroded connector or loose terminal can imitate a motor failure even when the pump is fine. The electrical and mechanical parts work together, and any weak link can trigger the warning.

But if it comes back or keeps repeating halfway through the cycle, it is not advisable to keep trying without further investigation: the problem may be more serious than accumulated dirt.
How to tell a blockage from a faulty pump
Mechanical blockage: It usually behaves irregularly. The dishwasher may try to start, make a brief noise, lose power, try again, or remain stuck in an intermediate stage. This irregularity indicates that something is hindering the movement, but not necessarily that the motor is dead. The symptoms are usually intermittent, as if the machine were hesitating before giving up.
Damaged pump: It produces more consistent signs. It may hum without moving water, remain completely still, or heat up abnormally. In this case, the problem is not an object moving around inside, but a component that is no longer doing its job. The electronics detect this failure and stop the operation to prevent further damage.
The difference matters because it changes the repair: a blockage can be resolved with cleaning and a thorough inspection, whereas a worn-out pump usually needs to be replaced. Sometimes both causes occur at the same time, which explains apparently random faults.
What to do if the error returns after cleaning
If the warning reappears after cleaning the filter and the lower area, the next step is to check the visible wiring and connectors around the pump. A corroded pin, a bent wire, or a loose connection can interrupt the power supply precisely when the system needs stability. A small fault at one specific point can bring the entire cycle down.
If the wiring is in good condition and the pump still does not work properly, more precise electrical tests are necessary, such as checking continuity and the motor’s behavior. This is already beyond the scope of a basic home inspection and makes it possible to determine whether the component is still working or has reached the end of its service life.
It is also important to consider the control electronics. Although less common, a module that does not send the correct command or incorrectly interprets the motor’s response can generate the same error code. For that reason, it is not advisable to replace parts at random: first rule out an obstruction, then the wiring, and finally the motor or control system. Skipping steps usually makes the repair more expensive rather than simpler.
When it is no longer a household problem
It is advisable to contact technical support when the error persists after a thorough cleaning, if there is a smell of overheating, metallic noises, or when the motor tries to start but stops without any clear pattern. These signs indicate that the fault is not simply an accumulation of residue, but a component with electrical or mechanical wear.
Forcing more cycles will not improve the situation; on the contrary, it may accelerate the deterioration. If the dishwasher is still under warranty, unnecessary handling may complicate coverage. And if it is no longer under warranty, a technician can provide an accurate diagnosis, clearly distinguishing whether the problem is a worn-out motor, faulty wiring, or an electronics failure.
