Signs that help distinguish a real leak from a misleading reading
There is not always a visible puddle. In fitted kitchens, with closed plinths or front panels, moisture can remain hidden for hours. Even so, the appliance usually leaves clear clues:
- An irregular humming sound when draining.
- A cycle that stops immediately after filling.
- Water marks on the lower front panel.
- Traces of foam where there should not be any.
A damp smell is another useful clue. When the base has been wet for some time, the inside begins to smell stale, and this sign often appears before the error becomes persistent. Limescale marks or whitish residue may also appear near the lower part of the appliance, especially if the leak is slow and repeated.
In some cases, water accumulates in the lower tray because of condensation or small internal splashes, rather than a major break. The distinction matters, but it does not change the priority: you need to locate where the water is becoming trapped. The protection does not activate by chance; it responds to a physical signal that deserves real attention.
When the fault stops being a DIY issue and requires a technician
If, after drying the base, checking the seal and inspecting the connections, the warning reappears, it is reasonable to consider a partial disassembly. At that point, the parts involved are not ones that should be handled without experience, such as the pump assembly, the fill assembly or certain safety sensors.
