The overflow error on a Fagor dishwasher usually appears when the appliance detects water where it should not be: in the bottom of the machine. What the overflow warning really means
The alert does not always mean that the tub is literally full to the brim. In practice, the safety system interprets a leak, an abnormal accumulation or an uncontrolled level and cuts off normal operation. It is a defensive measure, almost like an emergency switch, because water in the base can eventually affect the electronics, the motor or the wiring.
That is why this fault can be misleading. The user sees a dishwasher that stops, beeps or continues draining water, but the source is not always the drain. Sometimes the problem starts with a worn seal, a loose hose, excess suds caused by unsuitable detergent or a level sensor that is reporting incorrect information to the control board.
The key is to distinguish between a simple blockage and a real leak in the base. If the appliance enters protection mode because of accumulated water, cleaning the filters is not enough. The whole assembly needs to be inspected carefully: the lower area, pump, pipes, pressure chamber and condition of the internal connections.
The causes that most often trigger the alarm
In Fagor models, overflow is usually caused by a chain of small faults that build up like drops in a bucket. The most obvious is a blockage in the drainage system: dirty filters, food debris in the drain pump or a bent hose reduce the draining capacity and alter the appliance’s behavior.
It is also common for it to appear because of water in the bottom tray caused by a leak. That leak may originate from a loose clamp, a cracked hose, a door that no longer seals properly or even excess suds overflowing through places where they should not. In older appliances, the rubber ages, loses its elasticity and stops doing its quiet job.
Another frequent source is the level sensor or pressure switch, which in some models can accumulate dirt, soap residue or limescale. The first sensible decision is to disconnect the appliance from the power supply before touching anything. With water and electricity in the same situation, caution is not an overreaction. Then remove the dishes, dry anything that may be visible and check whether there is water in the bottom, especially around the plinth or beneath the door.
If the machine allows easy access to the inside, checking the filter and pump area is a good place to start. Bones, labels, seeds, pieces of glass or compacted food debris often get stuck there. A small object can act as a wedge and restrict the impeller’s movement, something that eventually affects drainage and, in some cases, triggers the overflow warning.
When water has reached the base because of a one-off leak, drying that area may allow the dishwasher to start working again temporarily. But this does not solve the underlying cause. If the alarm reappears shortly afterward, the appliance is indicating that water is still getting into a place where it does not belong. At that point, the exact source of the leak must be found.

The water circuit also needs attention. The hoses do not just need to be clean; they must be correctly positioned, without twists, pinching or cracks in the folds. A pipe that is forced to work under strain behaves like a compressed artery: the flow drops, the pressure changes and the machine begins to register an abnormal situation.
The role of the level sensor and why it gets dirty so easily
The level sensor, also known as a pressure switch or pressure detection system in some models, does not measure the water visibly. It works by reading the air pressure or pressure in the circuit connected to the tub, which makes it sensitive to accumulated dirt. A bit of dried soap residue may be enough to alter the reading.
When that pipe becomes blocked, the electronics stop receiving a reliable signal. The dishwasher may think it is full when it is not, or vice versa. In both cases, the reaction is usually similar: the cycle pauses, drainage is activated or the machine locks for safety. This is one of the reasons why the same error can have different causes.
That area should be cleaned carefully. The idea is not to force parts or insert aggressive tools, but to remove the dirt that is preventing a correct reading. If the dirt returns quickly, it is worth considering a general maintenance issue or poorly managed detergent and salt, since both contribute to the buildup of internal residue.
When the repair is no longer a DIY job
There is a fairly clear line between a basic inspection and technical intervention. If the dishwasher continues to show an overflow error after drying the base, cleaning the filters and checking the hoses, the next step will usually require partial disassembly and measurements. This is where the drain pump, pressure sensor and electronic control board come into play.
When the pump turns poorly, makes an unusual noise or frequently becomes blocked, the appliance cannot drain as it should and the electronics interpret the situation as dangerous. If the pump is damaged, the fault will not be fixed by a reset. The same applies if the sensor sends inconsistent signals or if the control board has been affected by moisture, oxidation or a power surge.
In these cases, a technical diagnosis does more than save time: it prevents unnecessary replacement parts. Changing components based on guesswork is often expensive and frustrating. The correct approach is to check what can be seen first, then what can be heard and, finally, what the electronics are hiding behind an alarm.
Why restarting sometimes works and sometimes only masks the problem
Turning the appliance off for an extended period can clear temporary electronic lockouts, which explains why some users manage to get the dishwasher running again after unplugging it for several minutes. Restarting discharges capacitors and clears temporary states in the control board, but it does not fix a leak, a broken pump or a dirty sensor.
That is why it is important to distinguish between a real solution and momentary relief. If the machine starts working again and the same warning reappears after one or two cycles, the underlying problem is still there. At that point, the alarm is not wrong; it has simply taken a little longer to appear again.

If it returns accompanied by water in the base, pump noise or poor drainage, the appliance is asking for a more serious inspection, not an endless sequence of resets.
