Error codes and symbols on the Siemens dryer display

On a Siemens dryer, the display usually warns you before the problem gets worse. A tank symbol, a filter light or a code such as E90 does not appear for no reason: it indicates a protection, an abnormal reading or an interruption in the cycle that is worth reading calmly. Most of these warnings point to poor ventilation, blocked condensation, a door that is not properly closed or electronic faults, and that initial clue saves time, noise and unnecessary repairs.

If you have a problem with your dryer, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can find out what all the errors mean and solve them easily and effectively.

How the dryer interprets what is happening inside

The panel warnings do not work like a simple traffic light. In practice, the Siemens dryer monitors the air, the water, the temperature and the safety lock. If any of these variables goes out of range, the appliance stops the cycle or displays a specific signal to prevent overheating, leaks or an incorrect programme reading. This logic explains why the same symptom, such as clothes being damp at the end, can have very different causes.

The visual language changes depending on the model. On some appliances, letters and numbers appear; on others, an icon is enough to make it clear that the tank needs emptying, the filter is loaded with lint or the door has not been properly latched. Reading the context matters just as much as reading the code: a dryer that stops shortly after starting does not indicate the same thing as one that finishes but leaves the clothes cold and heavy. The display is actually summarising a fault or an active protection with very few words.

That is why the sensible first step is not to dismantle anything, but to observe. If the warning appears after a long cycle, in a closed room or after several loads in a row, the cause may be a slight blockage or a sensor affected by excessive lint. When the message appears every time the dryer starts, the situation is different: the dryer is insisting that something is not right, and this is not simply a random panel warning.

The most common signals and what they usually mean

In the Siemens range, messages related to airflow are among the most frequent. A dirty filter, a blocked grille or a condenser loaded with fibres reduce drying capacity and force the machine to work harder. The result is usually clothes that come out warm but not completely dry, or a cycle that becomes longer without improving the result. In these cases, the warning is not accusing a part of being broken; it is pointing out that the appliance is not breathing properly.

Warnings related to water drainage are also common. In condenser and heat pump models, the extracted vapour turns into water and must go to the tank or the drain. If this route is interrupted, the system interprets it as a drainage problem. Sometimes the container is not actually full; the cause may be a stuck float, a dirty pump or a hose with damp lint inside. The panel sees an anomaly where the user only sees an apparently empty tank.

The door is another sensitive point. A lock that does not engage, a garment caught in the edge or a misaligned latch is enough to prevent the dryer from starting or to stop the cycle. It is not a minor nuisance or a trivial fault: it is a basic safety measure. If the dryer cannot confirm that it is locked, it will not operate. And when the appliance enters the realm of electronics, the message becomes less intuitive: the control board, internal communication and sensors outside their normal range require more caution and less improvisation.

What to check first before assuming a serious fault

The order of the checks matters more than intuition. Before opening panels or suspecting an expensive part, it is worth disconnecting the machine for a few minutes, switching it back on and checking whether the warning disappears. Many blockages are temporary and result from an incorrect reading, excess accumulated heat or a safety pause that is resolved with a clean restart. If the symbol disappears and does not return, the problem may have been temporary.

Next comes the visible maintenance. The lint filter should be left clean after every cycle, not as a decorative routine, but because it acts as the first barrier for the air. When this filter becomes clogged, the dryer tries to breathe through a closed piece of fabric: it dries less effectively, takes longer and activates its protections. The filter compartment also deserves attention, as damp lint forms a compact crust there that is difficult to see, as does the condensation tank, which may appear empty even though the circuit is partially blocked.

The installation also matters. A dryer pressed against the wall, fitted into a space without ventilation or connected to a bent hose behaves like a machine operating with a permanent bottleneck. Heat builds up, the air loses speed and the panel notices it immediately.
