E403 Error on an AEG Hob: Causes and Solution
The E403 error on an AEG hob indicates that the electronics have detected an overheating situation and have stopped the cooking zone as a safety measure. It is not a minor warning or a simple panel glitch: the hob interrupts operation to prevent damage to the glass, the internal components and the cookware that is still retaining heat.
In most cases, the message disappears once the surface has cooled down and the appliance has been fully restarted. However, if it reappears frequently, even after allowing a reasonable cooling period, it is worth checking factors such as poor ventilation, unsuitable cookware or an incorrect temperature reading, which may be behind the lockout.

What the hob is really saying when E403 appears
The E403 code does not describe a generic fault, but rather an active thermal safety response in the cooking zone. The hob measures the temperature using internal sensors and, when it interprets the heat as exceeding the safe range, it cuts the power to protect the appliance. It is a preventive reaction, similar to an automatic brake: inconvenient for the person cooking, but necessary to prevent more serious damage.
This cut-off may be caused by intensive use or by a build-up of heat that the electronics no longer consider manageable. For example, a very hot casserole dish, a frying pan that was removed only recently, a lid resting on the surface or several zones operating at high power for a long time can raise the surrounding temperature more than expected. The hob does not distinguish the user’s intention; it only responds to the temperature it detects.
In addition, the design of induction cooking, which heats quickly and precisely, means that it reacts sooner than other types of cooking when something goes out of range. That is why the E403 code often appears abruptly, just when the zone is under the greatest strain.

The most common causes behind the warning
- Accumulated heat: A heavy pot, a very hot base or several preparations in succession can raise the temperature enough to activate the protection. In this case, the fault is not with the hob, but with a thermal load that has exceeded its safety threshold.
- Unsuitable cookware: Cookware compatible with induction has a ferromagnetic base and transfers heat steadily. An irregular or warped utensil, or one that retains too much heat, can put greater demands on the zone and cause unusual thermal behaviour that activates the error.
- Poor ventilation: Built-in hobs need space to ventilate underneath and around them. A tight installation, an enclosed cabinet, accumulated dust or blocked grilles prevent heat from being dissipated properly, raising the internal temperature and activating the thermal protection.
- Incorrect temperature reading: A misaligned sensor, an irregular connection or a tired electronic module may cause the hob to interpret the temperature as higher than it really is, generating the error even when there is no actual overheating.
- Installation environment: An oven installed very close by, a poorly designed drawer or a mounting base that retains heat can raise the overall temperature. The hob cannot tell whether the heat comes from its own operation or from the surrounding environment; it only measures the temperature it receives.
What to check before switching the hob on again
- Remove hot cookware: Although it may seem obvious, a pot or frying pan with a red-hot base can retain enough heat to keep the hob’s protection active.
- Switch it off and allow it to cool: Stop using the hob and wait for the surface and the inside of the appliance to reduce in temperature. Residual heat may remain for several minutes after switching off.
- Disconnect the electrical supply: On models with an accessible plug, unplug the appliance from the mains. On integrated hobs, switch it off at the consumer unit or the circuit breaker supplying the kitchen. The recommended interval is at least 30 seconds so that the electronics can restart completely.
- Restart and check: Once the power is restored, the system starts up with its initial settings. If the temperature has fallen sufficiently, the message will disappear. The residual heat indicator may remain active without indicating a fault.
If the warning reappears immediately, it is best not to continue using the hob. The appliance is indicating that it is still detecting an out-of-range condition; forcing it to operate may make the situation worse and damage the electronics.
Why induction is so sensitive to heat
Induction combines speed, precision and continuous control, heating the cookware directly with a great deal of energy in a short time. This sensitivity allows for fine control, but it also means that any thermal deviation is detected earlier than with other types of cooking, which is why warnings can appear so abruptly.
This sensitivity is not a defect, but a safety advantage: the hob acts before visible damage such as smoke, odour or deformation occurs, protecting the glass, the coils and the electronics.
However, this precision means that poor installation or very intensive use becomes apparent quickly. If a zone operates at its limit for too long, the thermal protection is activated easily, anticipating possible damage.
How to reduce the risk of the E403 error appearing again
- Avoid leaving very hot cookware on the surface.
- Use cookware suitable for induction, with a ferromagnetic base and in good condition.
- Ensure proper ventilation in the area beneath the hob. Leave space for air to circulate freely and clean away any accumulated dust or grease.
- Clean the cabinet and grilles regularly to prevent blockages.
- Avoid cooking at maximum power for long periods without breaks. Take breaks between preparations so that the system can dissipate heat.
An induction hob works best when it has room to “breathe”, just as an engine performs worse when it overheats.
When it is advisable to stop using the hob and request a technical inspection
If the E403 error persists after allowing the hob to cool, disconnecting the power and restarting it, the sensible thing to do is stop using it until a technician has inspected it. Continuing to cook on a zone that repeatedly locks itself only puts additional strain on a system that is already giving you a warning.
In addition, if you notice other symptoms such as sudden shutdowns, zones that respond with a delay, unusual beeping or instability, this is a sign that the problem may lie with misaligned sensors, damaged internal wiring or a faulty electronic board.
In these cases, continuing to use the hob will not help; it may worsen the fault and make the repair more expensive.
