What the E18 code means on this Balay

On models in this family, the warning is generally linked to a blockage or fault in the drainage system. The pump filter may be full of coins, lint, hairpins or small objects left in pockets. The pump impeller may also be blocked, or the outlet hose may have become kinked.

The error does not usually indicate a water inlet problem, although both faults can be confused when the programme remains stopped. The timing provides the clue: E18 normally appears when the machine should empty the drum before spinning. A humming sound without water leaving points to a pump receiving power but unable to turn.

Safe checks before removing anything

Switch off the machine, unplug it and close the water tap. If water remains inside, place towels and a container beneath the lower service flap. Emptying can happen suddenly and the water may be hot, so allow the appliance to cool first. Electrical safety must come before any inspection.

Slowly remove the drain filter, usually located behind the lower flap. Clean the thread and housing, then check that the small inner impeller moves with slight resistance without sticking. Do not force it with metal tools: a broken blade can cause vibration and leave the pump unusable.
