Electric scooter with green light but not charging: causes and fix
A green light can hide a charging fault. Learn how to locate it without putting the battery at risk.

When the charger stays green from the first second and the scooter does not gain range, the battery is not necessarily full. On many models, that indicator means the charger is not detecting a current demand, whether because of poor contact, a faulty adapter, a safety lockout or a worn battery.
The inspection should begin with external components and move toward the electronics only when the evidence points there. This helps avoid buying a new battery unnecessarily and, above all, prevents unsafe handling of a lithium pack that may be hazardous if it is swollen, damaged or overheating.

What the charger green light means
Under normal conditions, the indicator usually shows red, orange or yellow while current is flowing and turns green when the process ends. However, the exact behavior depends on the brand, charger and battery management system. Therefore, a solid green light with the cable connected does not by itself confirm that charging has finished.
The difference lies in what happens next. If the scooter shows a high percentage and retains normal range, the battery is probably full. If it remains off, displays a low level or runs out within minutes, the green light may indicate an open circuit: the charger has power, but energy is not reaching the cells.
Safe checks before looking for an internal fault
First plug the adapter into a known working outlet and observe its indicator without connecting it to the vehicle. Then inspect the entire cable, especially the areas near the plugs, where repeated bending can break internal conductors. Once connected to the scooter, the plug should remain firm, without looseness or interruptions when touched gently.
The charging port collects dust, sand and moisture because it is usually close to the ground. A flashlight can reveal bent pins, corrosion or darkened plastic. Clean it only with the equipment disconnected and completely dry; do not insert needles, screwdrivers or metal objects. A deformed contact can cause a short circuit or turn a simple repair into a larger one.
When the charger or battery is at fault
A defective adapter may turn on its LED and still fail to deliver enough voltage when connected to the scooter. The most reliable test is another compatible charger with the same voltage, polarity and connector, never one chosen merely because it fits physically. On 36-volt batteries, the charger usually delivers 42 volts; on 48-volt systems, it is normally 54.6 volts, although the manufacturer specification always takes priority.
The battery becomes suspect when the scooter has lost substantial range, shuts down under acceleration, reaches 100% unusually quickly or refuses to accept current after sitting discharged for months. The BMS, which protects the cells, can block charging because of temperature, abnormal voltage or internal imbalance. Do not bypass the lockout or open the battery: the repair requires professional measurements and may involve replacing the complete pack.
Signs to stop charging and contact a technician
Disconnect the charger if its casing becomes excessively hot, there is a chemical smell, you hear sparking or the battery is swollen. It is also wise to stop if you see burn marks, moisture in the connector or damaged cable insulation. A damaged lithium battery should not remain connected for hours or charge unattended.
If the correct charger stays green, the port is clean and the percentage does not rise, the likely causes include the BMS, fuse, internal wiring or degraded cells. Voltage measurement under load provides more information than the indicator color, but it should be performed by a qualified professional. The final cost depends on the model: replacing a charger is usually far cheaper than repairing or replacing a battery.
The charger light is a clue, not a diagnosis
The LED is useful evidence, but it is not proof that the battery is full. Comparing it with the displayed percentage, actual range and physical condition of the port helps separate a simple fault from an electronic failure. Keeping the cover closed, avoiding prolonged discharge below 20% and storing the scooter in a dry place prevents many of these problems.
