Why the door will not lock on a Balay Varioperfect

The lock does not depend only on the door appearing to be closed. When a program is selected, a mechanical catch must enter the lock and a sensor confirms that the door is secured. If the machine does not receive that signal, it prevents water from entering and will not start, even when the control panel, lights and display work normally.
