Error 43 on a Balay washing machine: causes, risks and solution

The warning is usually linked to the motor. These checks help locate the fault without putting the appliance at risk.

The E43 code on a Balay washing machine usually signals an anomaly in the system that moves and controls the drum. The machine may stop when the wash begins, try to turn for a few seconds or lock the spin cycle to prevent damage. The code does not identify one specific part by itself: the cause may be worn brushes, wiring, the tachometer, the motor or the electronic control board.

What the E43 code means on a Balay washing machine

The electronics tell the motor to turn and expect a consistent signal about its speed. When that response does not arrive or is irregular, the program stops and the warning appears. The most common symptoms are a motionless drum, small jerks, a brief start followed by a stop or a spin cycle that never begins.

In older models with brushed motors, worn carbon brushes are a frequent cause. These parts continuously rub against the commutator and, after thousands of cycles, lose length and contact. In inverter motor models, the electronic module, speed sensor and connections become more important. The model manual and the machine’s behavior are essential for interpreting the code correctly.

Common causes and safe checks

The first check should be carried out without taking the washing machine apart. Switch it off, unplug it and wait 15 to 20 minutes before reconnecting it. A reset can clear a temporary electronic lock, but it does not repair a damaged component. If the message returns when a wash or spin cycle is requested, a physical fault is more likely.

With the appliance unplugged and the drum empty, turn it slowly by hand. It should move without metal scraping, knocks or strong resistance. A trapped object, damaged bearing or displaced belt can strain the assembly and trigger a rotation fault. Also check for a burning smell, sparks, smoke or unusual vibration; any of these signs means stop using the machine and keep it disconnected from the power supply.

Removing the rear panel to inspect the motor is not advisable without knowledge of electrical systems and appliance repair. Even when unplugged, some components may retain a charge, and a wrongly fitted connection can cause further damage. Checking the plug, avoiding overloaded power strips and making sure the drum is not blocked are reasonable limits for a household inspection.

Brushes, tachometer or control board: locating the fault

A technician first checks that the drum turns freely and then examines the motor, connectors and wiring. In traditional motors, the condition of the brushes and commutator is measured; if the carbon brushes are very short or burnt, replacing them may solve the problem. Replacing the part is not enough if the commutator is damaged or the winding has failed.

The tachometer, also called the speed sensor, tells the control board the motor’s revolutions. A faulty signal can produce the same symptoms as a damaged motor. If the motor and sensor work correctly, the investigation moves to the control module, where a triac, track or power component may have failed. The E43 code is a motor-control symptom, not a final diagnosis.

How much it may cost and when repair is worthwhile

The price depends on the model, spare-part availability and labor. As a rough reference in Spain, a diagnostic visit may cost between 30 and 60 euros, while replacing the brushes is often around 90 to 160 euros. An electronic control board can raise the repair to approximately 180-350 euros, although prices vary and do not replace a formal estimate.

Repair usually makes sense when the washing machine is otherwise in good condition and the problem is limited to a connector, brushes or a sensor. If it is more than seven or eight years old and also has bearing noise, leaks or drainage faults, an expensive repair should be compared with the price of a new appliance. The soundest decision considers the machine’s overall condition, not just the number on the display.

A warning that calls for diagnosis, not guesswork

Resetting the appliance and checking the drum’s movement are reasonable measures, but repeatedly running cycles can worsen an overheated motor or damaged connection. A burning smell, water near the electrical installation or loud noises changes the situation entirely: the machine should remain unplugged until it has been inspected.

In many cases, the warning is solved with one specific repair and the Balay continues working for years. In others, it reveals accumulated wear in an aging appliance. Telling these situations apart requires measurements and professional assessment; replacing parts at random only turns a useful warning into an unnecessary bill.
