Matter-compatible home appliances: what’s changing and which ones to buy
Interoperability is now reaching major home appliances and opens up simpler, more flexible control.

The arrival of Matter has moved a piece that for years kept the connected home on a fragmented board: at last, several smart appliances can speak the same language without forcing the user to marry a single platform. The change is no small one. Where before it was necessary to think about closed compatibilities, proprietary bridges, and different apps for each brand, now a common standard is beginning to take shape that reduces friction and makes it more logical to buy technology for the home.
The practical impact is felt especially in large appliances and in certain climate control, cleaning, and air quality devices. Not all market models support it yet, but the compatible categories already sketch out a very concrete picture: refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, robot vacuums, purifiers, fans, environmental sensors, and some climate control systems have begun to integrate into this ecosystem. Matter was born to solve a very specific annoyance: incompatibility between brands, assistants, and applications. For years, users have had to check whether a device worked with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home before buying it, like someone checking a different lock for every door in the house. And that is where Matter begins to make a difference compared with the recent past of home automation.
Which appliances already fit better with Matter
The most visible category is that of connected refrigerators. With Matter, these devices can offer temperature control, status monitoring, and a more orderly integration with assistants and smart home platforms. The point is not to turn the fridge into a command center, but to make useful functions such as thermal adjustment or certain notifications available without depending on a specific brand. The standard also extends to variants such as freezers and smart wine cellars, in addition to specialized equipment like kimchi refrigerators already seen in some markets.
In climate control, the evolution is also clear. Air conditioning units were already present in earlier versions of the standard, but Matter has been refining control of individual units, specific rooms, and ventilation functions. This matters because home comfort depends less on a generic command and more on fine-grained management: turning on, turning off, adjusting temperature, changing modes, or coordinating operation with other devices in the home. The more precise the command, the more useful the system.
Cooking and washing are also entering this territory. Dishwashers compatible with Matter allow users to control power on and off, schedule cycles, and receive alerts about program status. In the case of washing machines, the standard already includes progress notifications, a modest feature in appearance, but very practical when the user wants to know whether the laundry is halfway done or already finished without going into the kitchen or laundry room every ten minutes.
The biggest leap comes with autonomous cleaning equipment. Compatible robot vacuums can not only be turned on or off; they also report progress, cleaning mode, and status incidents, such as errors or brush status. That detail matters because this type of device lives by its context: a low battery, a blocked brush, or a full bin completely changes the experience. Matter adds a clearer layer of communication between the robot and the home system.
The real weight of climate control and indoor air
In increasingly airtight homes, indoor air has gone from a secondary issue to a piece of domestic health. That is why Matter includes categories such as air quality sensors, purifiers, and fans. They are not simple accessories; they are the invisible thermometer of a home that breathes. Sensors can measure fine particles such as PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, as well as CO2, NO2, VOCs, CO, ozone, radon, and formaldehyde, among other parameters. It is a broad repertoire, closer to a measurement station than a decorative gadget.

Fans have earned their own category within Matter because not all models do the same thing. Some allow oscillation, others speed adjustment, airflow direction, or special modes. The specification tries to reflect that diversity so compatibility is not purely nominal. It is not enough for the device to turn on; it also matters that it preserves part of its functional personality within the smart ecosystem.
What Matter allows you to control and what it still does not solve
Matter’s great value is that it offers a common language, but it does not magically make all devices the same. Each category supports a specific set of functions and, depending on the manufacturer, there may be more or less control than you will see in its own app. That difference is important: the standard guarantees interoperability, but the level of detail still depends on the hardware and software of the device.
So it helps to think of Matter as a shared highway. All vehicles travel along the same road, but not all have the same speed or the same equipment. A dishwasher may offer power on, power off, and notifications; a robot vacuum, in addition, brush status or cleaning mode; a refrigerator, temperature monitoring. Compatibility exists, yes, but it does not erase the internal logic of each product.
There are also time-related limits. Some categories are still expanding or arrive gradually depending on the standard version. Dryers, for example, appear as an expected addition in future expansions, showing that the ecosystem is still growing and not closed. Matter advances in layers, like a house that is being renovated without being completely emptied.
How buying a smart appliance changes
The Matter label should not be seen as a commercial decoration, but as a sign of real interoperability. For the buyer, this changes the selection criteria. It is no longer just about whether the device has a screen, Wi-Fi, or a flashy app, but whether it will be able to live with the platform already in the home. In simple terms, the standard reduces the risk of buying a brilliant but isolated device.
In practice, this affects the perceived lifespan of the product. An appliance that can keep working with different ecosystems has more room to adapt to changes in brand, phone, or assistant. And in the domestic world, that matters as much as energy consumption or noise. Technology that ages poorly is not always the weakest, but the one that ends up alone too soon.
Installation also changes. Many Matter devices link through a simpler process, with QR codes or guided pairing, and integrate into local networks with fewer intermediate steps. That ease does not eliminate the value of hubs or controllers that some environments need, but it does reduce the complexity of starting a connected home without turning it into a home engineering project.
What role assistants and hubs play in this new scenario
One of Matter’s most useful advances is that it does not force you to choose a single brand for control. Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings can coexist better when the device already arrives with compatible certification. That does not mean they all do exactly the same thing, but it does mean the user no longer feels trapped on a single technological island.
Even so, in some cases a Matter controller or a bridge device that acts as the management core is still needed. Many smart speakers, home displays, modern routers, and streaming boxes already serve that role. The difference is that the system’s logic no longer revolves around a single manufacturer and instead depends more on the home network and common standards.
That change has a quiet but profound consequence: automations become more robust. If the local network works well, many basic commands do not depend on external servers. In homes with many devices, that translates into less latency, fewer points of failure, and a more immediate sense of control. The switch stops lagging, the washing machine stops living in another universe, and the purifier responds with more predictable logic.
Why adoption is moving slowly despite the enthusiasm
Despite all the above, Matter’s expansion has not been explosive. The explanation is fairly down to earth: manufacturers, catalogs, and users do not move at the same pace. Companies need to adapt hardware, certify firmware, and redesign product lines; consumers, for their part, replace appliances much more slowly than a phone or a light bulb. A refrigerator or washing machine is not replaced on a whim every year.
There is also a question of technological inheritance. Many homes already have devices that work reasonably well with previous systems, and there is no real urgency to replace them. That is why the transition will be gradual, with new certified models and some older devices that may receive compatibility through updates, as long as the manufacturer allows it. In this area, change moves at the pace of a home renovation: first it is planned, then installed, and finally integrated.
The other brake is the difference between basic compatibility and advanced control. There are users who want to turn off a lamp with their voice and others who expect complex automations, statistics, profiles, and detailed rules. Matter solves interoperability, but it does not eliminate the learning curve of the connected home. Even so, by simplifying the foundation, it makes it much more likely that the rest will start to make sense.
What to look at before choosing a compatible model
In a well-planned purchase, the word compatible should not be read in isolation. It is worth checking which specific functions the device exposes to Matter, because certification may be broad in name and more limited in detail. Not all models allow the same level of monitoring, and this is especially noticeable in large appliances, where advanced functions often coexist with basic power, status, or notification controls.
Firmware updates also matter. Some manufacturers are adding Matter support to products already sold, but they do not always do so at the same speed or with the same scope. A device that appears compatible today may receive more functions later, while another may remain partially integrated. Reading the technical sheet is still more useful than relying only on the logo on the box.
At this point, the sensible recommendation is to think about the whole ecosystem. It is not enough for the appliance to have support; the home also needs a stable network, compatible control devices, and a minimum organization of which assistant or app will serve as the command center. Home automation works better when it is designed as a system, not as a sum of isolated purchases.
A transition that changes everyday experience more than fashion
Underlying all this: Matter’s value is not in novelty as spectacle, but in the normalization of the connected home. Where before there was a mix of promises, hubs, and cross-compatibilities, a common layer is beginning to appear that simplifies life without forcing users to give up brand diversity. It is a less flashy evolution than a product launch, but much more important for the real user experience.
Matter-compatible appliances do not turn the house into a futuristic laboratory; they make it easier to manage. The refrigerator informs better, the dishwasher understands better, the robot vacuum integrates better, the purifier responds better, and climate control stops being a small isolated kingdom. That is the real change: home technology stops feeling like a collection of islands and starts working like a city with common streets.
The transition will continue to be uneven, with manufacturers moving faster than others and with devices that retain exclusive functions outside the standard. But the direction is already set. Matter is pushing the industry toward cleaner, less arbitrary, and more useful compatibility for those who live with these devices every day.
