The cheapest and most expensive electricity hours this Wednesday for using the washing machine, dishwasher and other appliances without sending your power bill soaring

This Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the best time to turn on appliances in homes with a regulated tariff or indexed contract is concentrated between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., when the price drops to 0.0717 euros/kWh, that is, 71.66 euros/MWh. The most useful window for running the washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer or electric water heater without watching the meter like someone monitoring an electrocardiogram runs from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with very similar prices and clearly below those seen during the rest of the day.
The hour to avoid is clear: from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., when the price reaches 0.2396 euros/kWh, more than three times the cost of the best hour of the day. It is also advisable to avoid, as far as possible, the 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. block, precisely when many households turn on the oven, hob, television, air conditioning, chargers and the entire little electric orchestra of the evening. The average daily price stands at 0.1271 euros/kWh, according to the hourly data published for the regulated market.
Wednesday leaves a very clear cheap window: from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The household news of the day is not hidden in some impossible table: this Wednesday there is a cheap window that is fairly convenient for concentrating consumption. It is not the early hours of the morning, nor one of those absurd times when saving means getting up like a medieval baker. Electricity drops sharply from 2:00 p.m. and keeps prices low until 6:00 p.m. In practical terms, this makes it possible to organise much of your high-consumption use during a reasonable period, in the middle of the afternoon, without turning the house into a control room.
The PVPC prices show a very clear sequence: from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., 0.0733 euros/kWh; from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., 0.0725 euros/kWh; from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., 0.0727 euros/kWh; and from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the daily minimum, 0.0717 euros/kWh. This is the natural period for programming the washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, electric water heater, robot vacuum or charging devices that can wait. There is no mystery here: anyone with room to shift their consumption should shift it to this period.
A small oasis also appears in the morning, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at 0.0724 euros/kWh. It is an isolated hour, useful for anyone working from home or able to leave an appliance programmed, but less flexible than the longer afternoon block. After that, the price rises again between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., a more uncomfortable stretch for the wallet: 0.1366 euros/kWh from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., 0.1441 from 11:00 a.m. to noon, 0.1440 from noon to 1:00 p.m. and 0.1424 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Midday, paradoxically, is not all cheap. Electricity has these little quirks: it looks like a straight line and then suddenly takes a turn.
The important point is that the cheap period does not exactly coincide with the traditional idea of off-peak hours. Since 2021, the 2.0 TD tariff has distinguished between off-peak, standard and peak periods, but the actual PVPC price each day depends on more pieces: the wholesale market, network tolls, charges, adjustments and other regulated elements. That is why there can be very good standard hours and less impressive off-peak hours. The label helps, yes; the hourly price is what matters.
The night is once again the dangerous zone for the wallet
This Wednesday’s curve has an obvious enemy: the night. The 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. period contains the most expensive hours for regulated-market consumers. From 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the price rises to 0.1970 euros/kWh; from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., it reaches a peak of 0.2396 euros/kWh; and from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., it still stands at 0.1619 euros/kWh. In other words, running the washing machine at nine in the evening is not a financial tragedy, of course, but it is the typical everyday gesture that, repeated many times, eventually leaves you with a bill that looks distinctly unfriendly.
This is where it helps to bring the matter down to earth. A modern washing machine may consume very little on an efficient programme, but a tumble dryer, oven, old ceramic hob, electric water heater or air conditioner working hard are playing in another league. The impact does not come only from switching something on, but from how much power it demands and for how long. One coffee does not ruin anyone. An oven running for well over an hour, a full drying cycle and a water heater recovering its temperature during the worst period are another story.
There is a simple reason why the night is usually expensive: it coincides with people returning home, dinner, heating or cooling, kitchen appliances and the peak of residential demand. The grid fills up with small routines taking place at the same time. A frying pan, a hot shower, a dishwasher, an electric heating element. Everything seems small when viewed from a kitchen, but multiplied by millions of households, it makes noise. A lot of it.
It is worth avoiding the opposite mistake too: obsessing over every cent. Sensible saving does not mean living like a slave to the hourly table, but moving whatever is easy to move. Programming a washing machine for 3:30 p.m. instead of running it at 9:15 p.m. Leaving the dishwasher until after lunch. Heating water in the electric water heater during the cheapest period, if the appliance allows it. The good move is the one that does not turn domestic life into an electrical-inspector entrance exam.
The appliances that matter most when electricity prices rise
The appliances it makes most sense to shift are those that combine significant consumption with a certain degree of flexibility. The washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, electric water heater, electric-car or home-battery charging, if applicable, are the obvious candidates. Some heating and cooling systems can also be shifted, although comfort comes first here; nobody should turn the living room into a greenhouse just to save a few cents.
The washing machine lends itself well to scheduling. If the noise is not a problem and the building allows it, the period from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. is the cheapest on Wednesday, but there is no need to hit the exact minute as if it were a Formula 1 start. The whole 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. period works well. The same goes for the dishwasher. Loading it after lunch and letting it run during this window is an almost invisible decision in terms of routine. The tumble dryer deserves more attention, because it usually consumes more; if it can avoid the night, all the better.
The electric water heater is another silent actor. You do not see it, it makes no noise, it asks for no permission. But it consumes electricity. Programming it to heat water during cheap hours can make a difference, especially in homes where hot water depends entirely on electricity. The same applies to heating and cooling: on hot days, cooling the house slightly before the expensive period can reduce the appliance’s workload during the worst hour. No miracles, no fairground-salesman stories. Just domestic physics.
The oven and hob are harder to shift because food has schedules, hunger and family around it. Even so, it is worth knowing: cooking between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. this Wednesday coincides with the daily maximum. If part of the preparation can be brought forward, a pressure cooker used, the microwave used for certain dishes or the dishwasher left for the cheaper afternoon period, the bill will be grateful. Not every saving requires living worse. Sometimes it is enough not to send all the heavy consumption marching together at the worst possible time.
The wholesale market and PVPC are not the same thing, even if they look alike
The wholesale market, the famous pool, is also lower this Wednesday. The average daily price stands at 38.96 euros/MWh, with a minimum of -0.66 euros/MWh and a maximum of 97.50 euros/MWh for June 10, 2026. Wholesale electricity even records zero or negative prices during the middle of the day, especially between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with the minimum occurring between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
But here comes the classic trap, wrapped in technical jargon and served cold: the fact that the wholesale market posts negative prices does not mean electricity is free at home. Consumers do not pay only the pure cost of producing electricity. The PVPC includes network tolls, charges, system-balancing costs, commercialisation and other components. Then come the applicable taxes. So a negative hour in the market does not turn the bill into a popular festival with confetti.
The PVPC is the regulated price applied to those who have this type of contract with a reference supplier. Hourly energy prices for the following day are published each day, and since 2024 the calculation has incorporated a new methodology to reduce volatility, with a portion linked to forward markets. In 2026, this integration of futures references reaches 55%, which smooths out part of the daily ups and downs without erasing the hourly signal: when you consume still matters.
The regulated price can only be applied by reference suppliers, varies every hour and is available to individuals and micro-enterprises with a contracted capacity of less than or equal to 10 kW in each hourly period. In other words, it is not “electricity” for everyone. It is electricity for a specific group of consumers. Anyone with a fixed tariff in the free market will not necessarily see these hourly prices on their bill, even though the wholesale market ultimately influences the offers companies launch or renew.
The bill does not fall just because you watch the clock
The hourly price matters, but it does not exist in isolation. The electricity bill has a fixed component linked to contracted capacity and a variable component tied to the energy consumed. Under the PVPC, the variable portion depends on how much is consumed and at what time. The bill includes contracted capacity, energy consumed and taxes; and the value of hourly consumption changes according to the PVPC 2.0 TD price.
This explains an uncomfortable truth: shifting consumption helps, but it does not fix an excessively high contracted capacity, a poorly insulated water heater, an old fridge that hums like a tractor or a home that loses cool air through windows that close with the elegance of a bar shutter. Hour-based saving is one lever. Not the only one. And certainly not always the biggest.
It is also important to read the contract properly. The free market is full of tariffs with fixed prices, their own time-of-use rates, temporary promotions or indexed formulas with margins. A user may see in the news that electricity prices fall at a certain time and still pay under a different system. That is why the key phrase is not only “electricity price”, but type of contract. It usually appears in the contract details on the bill. If PVPC is listed, the customer is in the regulated market. If not, there is probably a free-market tariff with agreed terms.
Transmission and distribution network tolls also weigh on the final bill, even if they are less eye-catching than the cheapest hour of the day. These less television-friendly ingredients are what explain why the bill does not match the wholesale-market headline in any straightforward way. Electricity, alas, never arrives alone: it comes with its retinue of regulated costs, margins and adjustments.
Wednesday’s hourly table, read without getting lost
For anyone who needs the complete picture, the day begins at middling levels: 0.1287 euros/kWh from 12:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.; 0.1247 from 1:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.; 0.1144 from 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; 0.1101 from 3:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.; 0.1078 from 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.; 0.1135 from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.; 0.1293 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.; and 0.1306 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. It is not a particularly spectacular early morning for saving, although it is far from the nighttime peak.
The morning offers one very good hour, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., at 0.0724 euros/kWh, immediately after the 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. period at 0.1173. Then it rises: from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., it moves between 0.1366 and 0.1441 euros/kWh. In other words, anyone who thinks the entire middle of the day is cheap is mistaken. Relief arrives a little later, with the 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. block, the real cheap heart of this Wednesday.
The afternoon splits in two. First, the friendly zone: 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Then, the climb: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 0.1399 euros/kWh; 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 0.1560; 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 0.1970; 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at 0.2396; 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at 0.1619; and 11:00 p.m. to midnight at 0.1495. The pattern is almost educational: cheap early afternoon, expensive night. Rarely does the curve speak so clearly.
The difference between the best and worst hour is almost 0.168 euros/kWh. Translated into a household context, that does not mean a single washing-machine cycle will change the economic fate of June, but it does mean that several high-consumption uses placed in the wrong period can add up. The electricity bill is like a leak: one drop is not alarming, but many eventually leave a stain.
The clock does not replace common sense
This Wednesday, it is best to use the highest-consumption appliances between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., preferably from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and avoid the 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. period, especially 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. That is the useful information, without varnish or smoke. For households with PVPC or an indexed tariff, moving the washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer or water heater to the cheap afternoon period can reduce the cost of variable consumption. For those with a fixed price in the free market, the table serves more as a gauge of the system than as a direct instruction for the bill.
Electricity prices fall in the wholesale market and leave some very cheap hours around midday, including negative prices in the pool. But consumers pay a final price made up of more pieces. That is the nuance separating serious data from a headline worthy of a street festival. No, electricity is not free. Yes, some hours are much better than others. And this Wednesday, for once, the best window does not require running the washing machine at three in the morning, with the house smelling of detergent and the neighbours’ patience hanging by a thread.
