The E21 code on a Balay dishwasher usually appears when the appliance detects a problem while draining water. The cause may be a clogged filter, a bent hose, a closed siphon connection or a drain pump blocked by food scraps, glass or other small objects.

If you have a problem with your dishwasher, you can use our free error code search tool. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What the E21 code means on a Balay dishwasher

The dishwasher must remove dirty water before moving to the next stage of the program. When the outlet flow is insufficient or the pump cannot move the water, the system stops the cycle and displays the warning. That is why it is common to find water collected in the bottom of the tub or dishes still covered with residue.

The source is not always the pump. A drain hose pinched behind the cabinet can produce the same symptom, as can a blocked sink siphon. On some models, the cover protecting the pump must also be fully locked in place; if it is loose, the impeller cannot work normally and the appliance stops again.

Safe checks before taking the appliance apart

Before checking any part, switch off the dishwasher, unplug it and close the water supply tap. Remove visible water with a sponge or container and wear sturdy gloves if you suspect broken glass may be present. Do not put your hand blindly into the pump area.

Remove the filter assembly from the base and wash it under the tap with hot water and soap. The metal mesh must be free of grease and particles. Then check that the drain hose is not crushed or bent and that the siphon outlet is open. A blockage in that connection can prevent draining even when the dishwasher itself is working correctly.

With the filters removed, inspect the pump cover according to the model manual. If access is possible, look for a label, bone, shard of glass or toothpick blocking the impeller. Remove only objects you can reach without forcing the mechanism and refit the cover until it is secure. Do not use metal tools near the impeller, as they could damage it.

When the error requires technical assistance

After cleaning the accessible areas, reinstall the filters and run a short drain program. If the water leaves normally and the warning does not return, the blockage was probably superficial. An electrical reset may also help: leave the appliance unplugged for a few minutes and try again, provided there are no leaks or burning smells.

If the pump hums but does not turn, remains completely silent or the code returns after every cycle, there may be an internal fault in the pump, wiring or electronic control board. Testing voltage and replacing components requires specific knowledge and should not be attempted while the appliance is connected.

Water returning to the base, a visible leak, sparks, a burnt plastic smell or a circuit breaker that trips are reasons to stop testing. In these cases, keeping the dishwasher unplugged helps prevent further damage. Regular filter cleaning and removing large food scraps before loading the dishes can reduce new blockages, but they do not replace a diagnosis when the fault continues.

A clean drain prevents a small blockage from becoming a major fault

The E21 often begins with an almost invisible detail: a seed, peel or shard that reaches the pump area. Over time, water stops flowing like a narrow stream and becomes a pool inside the tub. Responding early, without repeatedly forcing resets, helps distinguish between a simple blockage and a repair requiring professional intervention.
